Turkmenistan-UN co-operation in intensifying the democratic reforms was a key theme discussed during the meeting at the Central Commission for Elections and Referenda of Turkmenistan. The guests of the Central Commission for Elections and Referenda were UN Permanent Resident, UNDP Coordinator Richard Young and the UN office representatives and the members of the delegation of the UN Secretariat Department for Political Affairs.

Chairman of the Central Commission for Elections and Referenda M. Karryev presented the key directions of the Turkmen leader’s policy aimed at intensifying the democratic processes on the basis of national traditions of the genuine sovereignty of the people. M. Karryev informed the guests of the forthcoming political campaign – the elections to velayat and city people’s councils.

Welcoming the large-scale reforms initiated by President Gurbanguly Berdymuhamedov and aimed at increasing the wellbeing and standards of living in the country the UN representatives expressed willingness to intensify co-operation to advance the democratic processes in Turkmenistan as well as to hold the forthcoming elections called upon to be an important stage of establishing the multilevel system of the sovereignty of the people.

The UN representatives will hold the talks at the Mejlis, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Justice and the Turkmen National Institute for Democracy and Human Rights under President of Turkmenistan and have the meeting with the public organisations.
