A regular meeting of the interagency commission on monitoring the implementation of Turkmenistan’s international human rights commitments was held in the Turkmen capital.

The meeting was held at the Turkmen Institute for Democracy and Human Rights under President of Turkmenistan to review the outcomes of the work and to specify the further steps to fulfill the tasks set to the commission. Chairman of the Commission, Vice Premier, Minister of Foreign Affairs R. Meredov emphasized that in the reported period the commission had aimed the work at monitoring the national legislation and working out the guidelines to bring the legislation in compliance with the international human rights acts, in particular the international conventions Turkmenistan had joined. The participants focused on the urgency of those steps in the context of the assessments and conclusions President Gurbanguly Berdymuhamedov had made at the first meeting of the State Commission on improvement of the legislation of Turkmenistan.

The members of the interagency commission including the officials of the national ministries and the Turkmen Institute for Democracy and Human Rights under President of Turkmenistan, the members of the Mejlis and public organisations worked out the recommendations and put forward the proposals to improve the current legislation and to draft the laws and statutory acts evolving from the international commitments of Turkmenistan and regulating the policy of the Turkmen state in various fields. The participants substantiated the necessity of adopting the new Family, Civil, Procedural, Criminal, Housing Codes and drafting the laws regulating and promoting economic activity as well.

The participants emphasized the necessity of expanding collaboration with the international experts and leading international organisations, in particular the United Nations Organisation. Turkmenistan had joined over 90 fundamental conventions and other international documents and nowadays stood steadfast to the provisions of those international legal acts.

The members of the commission took the decision to introduce the amendments and additions to the previously approved plan on preparation of the national reports on implementation of the international human rights commitments by Turkmenistan and the long-term action plan of the commission. In particular, the participants unanimously approved the list of the events on occasion of the coming celebrations of the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Provisions on the expert working group under the interagency commission.
