The railway station in Ashgabat – a ‘visiting card’ of the Turkmen capital, will be significantly modified. The project on reconstruction of the building and improvement of the adjacent territory amounted to about 19 million US dollars is to be completed by February 2009. By request of the Ministry of Railway Transport the Belda Company (Turkey) is to implement the project.
At present, the Turkish specialists are engaged in reconstructing the four-storeyed building of the central post office located some metres east of the railway station. The building will house seven ticket offices, information desks, waiting room, left luggage offices, baggage claim space and a ritual room. The office of railway administration, military commandant's office, transport police station and the museum of Turkmenistan railway history will be located on the first and the second floors. The archives of the Ashgabat railway station will be located on the third floor. Constructions works are to be completed by the beginning of the summer season.
The second project stage stipulates for reconstructing the railway station building, which was built over 50 years ago, and improving the adjacent territory. The waiting room, telegraph office and long-distance telephone exchange will be located in the central part of the building. The CIP hall will be located in the eastern wing of the building, the internet cafe and restaurant – in the western wing. The VIP hall and baby-changing room will be located on the first floor.
The building ‘dressed’ in marble and granite will be equipped with the information boards, self-closing doors, autonomous heating and cooling systems. The building will ‘grow up’. It will have the special decorations. The spire will be replaced. The clock – an attribute of the railway station worldwide will adorn the building as before.
The arrival and departure platform will be covered with the shed of light construction and illuminated wit the lamps, the bridge will be covered as well. The subways will lead from the adjacent avenue to the station building and from a parking lot to the platform. The subways will be wide enough to house shops. |
