Sport & Tourism : Turkmenistan champion team contests for the 2008 CIS Cup
 
FC Ashgabat contests for the 2008 Cup of the CIS and Baltic states in St. Petersburg. The tournament started on January 19.

20 Turkmen sportsmen B. Berdiev and M. Shamuradov (goalkeepers), P. Annaberdiev, N. Choliev, M. Aidov, B. Annageldiev, Y. Annamuradov (fullbacks), K. Durdiev, B. Kuliev, G. Hangeldiev, S. Geldyev, D. Durdiev, G.Garakhanov, D. Hajiev, B. Borovik (halfbacks), M. Kazankov, A. Amanov, A. Mirzoev, D. Urazov and G. Ovekov (forwards) represent our country at the prestige tournament.

This year the tournament is held for the 16th time. 16 teams split in four groups contest in the competitions. FC Ashgabat, Moldavian FC Sheriff from Tiraspol, Estonian FC Levadia from Tallinn and Russian FC Zenit from St. Petersburg were drawn for Group A. Two best teams will compete in a quarterfinal.

FC Ashgabat played versus FC Levadia on January 19 at the Zenit DSI. On January 20, FC Ashgabat played versus Russian FC Zenit. The match with the Moldavian sportsmen on January 22 will complete the group tournament.

The group winners will play in the quarterfinals on January 23. The semifinal matches will be held on January 25. The Cup winner will be announced on January 27 after the final is held.

2007 Turkmenistan champion team FC Ashgabat participate in the CIS Cup for the first time. The Turkmen footballers achieved the best results in the international tournament in 1994, 1997, 1998 and 2001 under the banner of FC Kopetdag, which ranked among the best four teams of the tournament.
