Science & Education : Reforming national science

Another important step to implement the reforms of science and education was made in Turkmenistan. The terms and procedure of admitting to postgraduate schools published in the national newspapers including the broad list of the specialities, which people will be trained in, give a comprehensive view of the trends and prospects of development of modern Turkmen science - a crucial factor of the progress of the Turkmen state and society.

The ultimate goals of the fundamental reforms of national science initiated by President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov include creation of the improved system of training scientific workers – scientists of the new formation called upon to ensure the fulfillment of the grandiose tasks set to the Turkmen nation in the third millennium. Recently the President of Turkmenistan issued the important documents including the Resolutions “On the Activity of the Academy of Science”, “On Improvement of the Scientific System of Turkmenistan” and the special Resolution on the guarantees of training highly qualified specialists in Turkmenistan and scientific workers and the state support of scientific research. Regulating the national scientific and technical policy these documents specify the measures to build the solid foundation for training scientific workers, create the necessary conditions for overall realization of the intellectual potential of the Turkmen nation.

Establishing the broad contacts with the authoritative research and educational centres worldwide is of particular concern to the Turkmen leader. The opportunities of intensifying collaboration in this field were a focus of the intergovernmental talks and have been successfully realized in the concrete events. The examples include the education exchange programmes successfully implemented with the EU member countries, the agreement on co-operation with the Harriman Institute of the Columbia University, expansion of the contacts with the leading higher educational establishments and research centres in Russia, the Republic of Turkey, other countries.

It is generally known that the level of development of scientific thought remains an indicator of development of a society, its potential capacities. The qualitatively new level that Turkmen science is achieving nowadays, meets the modern requirements, conforms to the essence of the historic changes taking place in the country.
