Ecological dialogue as foundations of global environmental security

Important environmental issues and international environmental cooperation are under discussion in Ashgabat. Representatives of 24 international organisations, scientists and experts from 17 countries of the world are participating in the conference on Environmental Cooperation of Turkmenistan with the International Organisations: Achievements and Success, which has started its work on November 21.

The main goal of the forum organized by the Ministry of Nature Protection of Turkmenistan is to showcase the accomplishments and achievements of the Turkmen state in implementing the national and foreign environment policies, overview fruitful international partnership in addressing global challenges of modern times and identify the prospects for promoting cooperation on these issues.

In early years of independence of the Turkmen state environment protection, efficient and effective use of natural resources and biodiversity conservation have been identified as the key aspects of the national strategy aimed at harmonizing sustainable development of the society and the environment and achieving environmental wellbeing. The first step along this way was the adoption of the Law “On the Environment Protection” and the other important legislative acts which spotlighted an environmental priority in the implementation of ambitious social and economic development programmes.

A major vector of Turkmenistan’s environmental policy is the intense international activity. Having ratified a number of the UN fundamental multilateral agreements in this sphere, the Turkmen state fulfills the commitments undertaken. Paying particular attention to addressing challenges of climate change, efficient water management and desertification, conservation of biodiversity of Turkmen nature, our country seeks to establish closer international contacts in this sphere on regional and global scale. The positive initiatives put forward by President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov from the high rostrum of the UN General Assembly to intensify the constructive international dialogue and develop the systematic mechanisms for multifaceted cooperation to achieve environmental security have seen strong support of the international community.

The experience in taking the nature conservation measures to preserve and restore biological diversity, protect the marine environment of the Caspian Sea, unique landscapes of the Karakum Desert and gorges of the Kopetdag Mountains, the achievements in addressing success of the practical solutions water consumption and land degradation problems as well as development of ecological tourism attract great interest among foreign scientists, ecologists, specialists and experts in various fields of life Today.

Turkmenistan has become an effective platform for numerous international forums aimed at exchanging positive experiences and knowledge on these issues, searching for most effective mechanisms and instruments of collaboration in the framework of regional cooperation between countries and fruitful partnership with various international organisations, including particularly the UN and its agencies.
