The 60th meeting of the Executive Board of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) chaired by Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah, President of the Olympic Council of Asia, a member of the International Olympic Committee took place in Ashgabat.
Opening the meeting the OCA President expressed profound gratitude to President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov for providing an opportunity and wonderful conditions conducive to the constructive and fruitful work of the forum. Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah noted that this event of particular importance for the continent was being held in white-marble Ashgabat on the eve of the 20th anniversary of independence of Turkmenistan whose people had gained outstanding achievements in social and economic development under the wise leadership of their national leader.
In his welcome statement to forum participants President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov wished every success in their work and expressed belief that the international Olympic movement would be promoted further for the benefit of all nations of the world.
“This meeting that has brought together over 70 representatives of the OCA Executive Board, the Asian Games Organising Committee and public sports organisations is a vivid illustration of integrated development of cooperation between Turkmenistan and the Olympic Council of Asia”, said President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov.
The important aspects of the Olympic movement around the Asian continent were considered during the forum. The heads of the OCA committees presented the reports on the work done in the reporting period and the prospects for cooperation in sports. The forum participants adopted a number of documents designed to promote the Olympic movement in Asian countries. The OCA Executive Board members were briefed on the preparations for the 4th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games which would be held in Incheon, South Korea in 2013.
The presentation of the 5th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games which will take place in Ashgabat in 2017 in accordance with the decision of the Olympic Council of Asia was a special item on the meeting agenda. A film describing in detail the Olympic village under construction in the Turkmen capital, the largest facility of its kind in the Central Asian region where the 2017 Asian Games will be held, was demonstrated during the forum.
Ashgabat was chosen to host the OCA Executive Committee for the second time in token of recognition of Turkmenistan’s growing significance and role in promoting the Olympic movement in Asia. The leader of the Turkmen state, who proclaimed the health of the nation and physical and spiritual development of the younger generation to be a state policy priority, has significantly contributed to the construction of numerous sports facilities meeting international standards throughout Turkmenistan in the shortest period of time.
