The presentation of the 2011 World Population report and the ceremony of opening the photo exhibition “People and Opportunities Presented by a World of 7 Million” took place at the Museum of Fine Arts in Ashgabat. The humanitarian action is organized by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in the framework of the 7 Billion Action campaign.

The aim of the action is to raise public awareness of such global issues of modern times as a dignified life of all people on the planet, preservation of the Earth's natural wealth, the opportunities and capacities of cities to promote economic growth and sustainable development.

Specialists of the Ministry of Health and Medical Industry of Turkmenistan, health care institutions, international organizations and diplomatic missions accredited to Turkmenistan, public organizations, the Civil Service Academy under the President of Turkmenistan, the State Committee for Statistics, the Institute of Strategic Planning and Economic Development of Turkmenistan, cultural and art workers and students attended the presentation.

Those speaking at the ceremony underlined the fact of holding the action as an important event testifying to Turkmenistan’s readiness to take joint practical actions to address global issues such as environment sustainability, fruitful cooperation on this issue between Turkmenistan and the United Nations, particularly with the UN Population Fund which closely collaborates with our country in implementing the programmes in such spheres as gender equality, reproductive health, etc. Emphasis was placed on the important role of the 2012 population and housing census in Turkmenistan in promoting social and economic development of our country.

The main purpose of the ongoing ambitious reforms in Turkmenistan in the epoch of new Revival is to build a developed democratic state where the ultimate goals are to serve people, improve their welfare and protect their rights, freedoms and legitimate interests.

All that is being done in the country to bring it to new heights of progress is viewed in the light of social priorities of the policy of the Turkmen leader Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov. An illustrative example of this is the Saglyk National Programme that has laid the foundation for a fundamentally new model of the national health care system

The drastic changes have taken place in the primary health care sector, much work has been done to optimize the work of medical institutions and introduce the institute of family medicine in the country. All of this has enhanced the effectiveness of the work on prevention of diseases and reduction of the sickness rate. The profound state support is given to maternity and child health care in our country.

After an international expert of the UNFPA Regional Office G. Kadyrkulova presented the summary of the 2011 World Population report, an exchange of views took place. Emphasis was put on the legal aspects of youth policy and the welfare of senior citizens.

An illustrative part of the humanitarian action is an exposition arranged in the halls of the Museum of Fine Arts. It is composed of the works created by Turkmen and foreign photographers which reflect the achievements and trends in developing a modern world with the population of 7 billion people, including those living in Turkmenistan.
