Day of German Industry in Ashgabat

The Day of German Industry took place at the Mizan Business Centre in Ashgabat. The cabinet ministers, specialists of ministries and departments and the Union of Manufacturers and Entrepreneurs of Turkmenistan participated in the high-level business meeting. A delegation of the Federal Republic of Germany consisting of heads of government institutions, business development organisations, specialists of well-known consulting firms and banks had arrived in the Turkmen capital specially to participate in the forum. The delegation was mostly composed of businessmen representing over 90 companies, including Siemens, Bosch, CLAAS, Liebherr, Leica, Gotzpartners, Hospitalia International, BASF, RWE.

The organizers of the economic forum which brought together about 350 participants in Ashgabat were the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Turkmenistan and the Germany’s Economy Office for Central Asia.

The welcome address of President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov to forum participants was presented during the opening ceremony. In his welcome address the Turkmen leader notes that Turkmenistan attaches considerable significance to the constructive dialogue and friendly relations with the Federal Republic of Germany as one of economically developed countries in Europe and strategic partner of our state. Such sectors as transport and communications, science and education, the construction industry, delivery of state-of-the-art machinery and equipment can be defined as promising fields for cooperation.


In his opening remarks, Head of the Department of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology of the Federal Republic of Germany Andres Neumann, who led the German delegation to Ashgabat, said this forum played the critical role in enhancing Turkmen-German relations that had been brought to a new qualitatively level and significantly intensified in recent years through mutual efforts. It was noted that the ever-increasing interest of the world, particularly European business community was conditioned by the tremendous economic and energy potential of the country and the scale of the ongoing reforms.

Greeting forum participants, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Republic of Germany to Turkmenistan Reiner Morell highly evaluated the prospects for stepping up the dialogue with Turkmenistan emphasizing that German companies willing to operate on the promising Turkmen market increased in number with every passing year.

After the plenary meeting was concluded, the forum continued its work in the four sessions focusing on key aspects of cooperation. In a wide range of issues under discussion emphasis was placed on Turkmenistan’s investment potential at the stage of economic diversification, collaboration in the financial and banking sectors and delivery of high-powered German equipment to Turkmenistan. In their reports and presentations the top managers of German companies focused on the readiness to actively collaborate in the projects initiated by the leader of the Turkmen state, particularly in reconstruction of the Turkmenbashi seaport, construction of an airport in Ashgabat and others.

The major areas of discussion included the prospects of collaboration in the energy sector given the tremendous hydrocarbon potential of Turkmenistan and diversification of transit of Turkmen energy to world markets.

Expressing the willingness to enhance and broaden the spectrum of partnership, the guests noted that Germany as one of the world’s leaders in advanced technologies stood ready to offer its expertise, innovations and know how. This was especially topical in the context of modernization of Turkmen economy and its active transition to an innovative way of development. In this context the possibilities for implementing new joint projects in the strategic fields of cooperation were discussed in detail.

The chemical, agricultural, construction and electronic industries were mentioned along with the fuel and energy sector as the major fields of cooperation. Establishing business contacts in the tourism sector was deemed to be quite promising in the context of the ongoing ambitious project of the Avaza national tourism zone on the ecologically pure shore of the Caspian Sea.

Particular attention was paid to cooperation in the private sector as well. The significant state support and encouragement of business initiatives have contributed to increasing a number of entrepreneurs and private producers who are able to become competitive exporters. Many industrial private businesses known well in Turkmenistan, including such the food industry leaders in our country as the Bereketli economic association, the Hazar confectionary plant and others use state-of-the-art equipment manufactured in Germany.

In the framework of this large-scale economic forum held in Turkmenistan for the first time the Ministry of Economy and Development of Turkmenistan organized a number of meetings for participants of the Day of German Industry. They were aimed at presenting the investment and business climate and economic development of our country to German manufacturers and establishing contacts with local businesses. A day before the business delegation of the Federal Republic of Germany had held the meeting at the Ministry of Communal Economy, the Bank of Foreign Economic Activities and the Union of Manufacturers and Entrepreneurs of Turkmenistan. The meetings at the Ministry of Agriculture of Turkmenistan were scheduled for German businessmen.

An exhibition showcasing the potential of major international companies from Germany, their latest projects and innovations was arranged at the Mizan Business Centre in the framework of the programme of the Day of German Industry.

This forum testified once again to the need to foster a dialogue between the business circles of the two countries as well as their willingness to gain concrete results and provided with an opportunity to bring Turkmen-German partnerships to a new level.
