A meeting with Regional Representative for Central Asia of the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) for Central Asia, Mr. Saber Azam, who had arrived to the Turkmen capital for a working visit, took place at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan.

The focus of the meeting was the ways to foster the Turkmenistan-UN dialogue in the humanitarian sphere. Turkmenistan as a permanent member of the Executive Committee of the Programme of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees profoundly contributes to global efforts and takes specific steps to provide assistance to refuges and protect their rights.

Turkmenistan having acceded to the fundamental conventions of the United Nations, including the Convention and Protocol relating to the Status of Refugees,

the Convention relating to the Status of Stateless Persons, demonstrates the commitment in practice to its obligations as well as the basic humanist principles that underlie the state policy. In accordance with the Decrees issued by President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov in July and October last year Turkmen citizenship was granted to over 3,000 persons.

It was noted that the progressive domestic and foreign policy of neutral Turkmenistan is consistent with the UN primary aims and objectives, particularly, those to ensure global peace, security and sustainable development. Seeking to implement its peace-making and peace-building potential for the benefit of humankind, the Turkmen state takes qualitatively new approaches to addressing urgent problems and challenges of the modern world through wide international cooperation. This vividly illustrated by the constructive initiatives put forward by President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov from the rostrum of the United Nations and welcomed and supported by the international community.

In his keynote speech at the sixty-six session of the United Nations General Assembly the leader of the Turkmen state put forward the initiative to hold an international meeting in collaboration with the UNHCR in Ashgabat in 2012 involving all parties concerned to introduce Turkmenistan’s experience in granting citizenship to refugees and stateless persons.

In this context the meeting participants discussed the issues regarding the organisation of the high-level international conference on the refugees and displaced persons that would take place in Ashgabat in May this year and become a new critical step to intensify international cooperation to achieve the UN Millennium Development Goals. Exchanging views, the sides underlined the topicality and timeliness of the Turkmen leader’s initiative to hold this forum for concerting global efforts to maintain peace, stability and stability regionally and globally. In this regard emphasis was put on the UNHRC’s willingness to strengthen and enhance cooperation with our country that the United Nations viewed as a dependable and trustworthy partner.

Underscoring the long-term positive experience of cooperation and new opportunities to foster traditional contacts, the meeting participants reaffirmed that Turkmenistan and the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Refugees to foster the fruitful dialogue aimed at promoting the human rights and guaranteeing the wellbeing and dignified life to citizens.
