The possibilities to enhance fruitful international cooperation in the field of mass media were the focus of the seminar which was held in Ashgabat. The three-day seminar for journalists in the framework of dynamically developing Turkmenistan-European Union cooperation particularly in the humanitarian sphere was organized under the CADAP Programme with the assistance of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan in Ashgabat.

As is known, Turkmenistan as a party to many UN conventions and international agreements to combat illicit trafficking in narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances has recently joined the UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs for the period of 2012-2015. In this context the seminar participants noted that this forum under the CADAP Programme was intended to facilitate an exchange of international practices for combating illicit drug trafficking and illustrated the practical steps Turkmenistan took to concert efforts to respond to global threats and modern challenges.

The representatives of the national media, the State News Agency, the State Committee for Television, Radio and Cinematography, the State Drugs Agency and other departments concerned participated in the forum. Coordinator of Europa House in Turkmenistan, Mr. Theo Hensels, an expert of the National Bureau for Drug Prevention of Poland, Mr. Yanus Sieroslavski and an expert of the European Monitoring Centre, Mr. Tomas Kattau had been invited to take part in the forum as international experts.

In their reports the Turkmen specialists presented the major aspects of the mass media policy of the Turkmen state and the media reform programmes. In this context it was noted that the Turkmen state attached considerable importance to the study of international experiences and practices in this field and promotion of partnership with the authoritative international organisations under regional programmes as well.

Underlining the readiness to make every effort to address this global threat, the seminar participants called for building up effective cooperation between Turkmenistan and the European Union in this field as well and emphasized that the meetings of this kind were effective and useful in facilitating the exchange of experiences and using them in practice.
