A briefing on the preparations for the February 12 presidential election in Turkmenistan was given at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for foreign journalists accredited to our country. The event was organized by the MFA of Turkmenistan in collaboration with the Central Commission for Election and Referenda of Turkmenistan.
Journalists of the world’s news agencies and the electronic, print and other media, including Associated Press, NCA (US), Reuters (UK), France Press (France), Xinhua (People’s Republic of China), Pakistan Press Network (Pakistan), RIA Novosti, Ogonek Journal, Turkmenistan International Journal (Russia), the Cihan News Agency, Anatolia news agency (Turkey), TRT TV and Radio Company (Turkey), Zaman-Turkmenistan Newspaper, Turkmenistan.ru online newspaper, among others participated in the briefing.
The participants were informed in detail of the progress of the presidential election campaign and the ongoing organizational activities. The Central Commission members reported on the readiness for the election. 2,307 polling stations were opened, 29 of them at the diplomatic representations of Turkmenistan in foreign countries. The electoral registers were completed. The first two crucial stages of the presidential election campaign – the nomination and registration of presidential candidates completed.
These days the presidential candidates are meeting with the electorates in Ashgabat and all the regions and appearing on television and radio and print media. Their authorized representatives are meeting with the electorates to present the candidates’ biographies and key provisions of their election programmes. In accordance with the national laws and international law standards the presidential candidates and their authorized representatives have the equal rights and opportunities to conduct the canvass campaign. The international observers started their work in Turkmenistan. In accordance with the Law of Turkmenistan on the Election of the President of Turkmenistan the early voting started on February 2.
It was emphasized that all necessary measures were being taken to hold this important political action that would be a new crucial step towards democratization of the Turkmen society in a proper and timely manner.
