President of Turkmenistan receives OSCE Secretary General

President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov received new OSCE Secretary General Lamberto Zannier, who had arrived in Ashgabat to participate in the International Conference entitled “Integrating Global Energy Markets – Providing Energy Security” being held in the Turkmen capital in accordance with the Resolution of the President of Turkmenistan.

Thanking for the heartfelt welcome extended in Turkmenistan and the opportunity of a personal meeting, the guest congratulated President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov on the 20th of anniversary of independence of Turkmenistan and the high government awards presented to the Turkmen leader. Expressing the best wishes to the Turkmen people, who moved forward with confidence along the path of reforms, Mr. Lamberto Zannier said the major international organization he headed was keenly interested in expanding and enhancing further fruitful cooperation in the interests of global security and sustainable development.

Greeting the distinguished guest, the Turkmen leader emphasized that in its turn Turkmenistan stood ready for an active and open dialogue within the OSCE. The Turkmen leader emphasized that our country as a full member of the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe stood for establishing multifaceted cooperation exerting positive influence on the global development processes noting with satisfaction that Central Asia had become a key priority of the OSCE’s activities.

During the meeting held in a businesslike, constructive atmosphere the Turkmen leader Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and his guest emphasized that given modern realities and the interests of most OSCE participating states cooperation to ensure security of energy transit was deemed to be a priority vector of collaboration within the organisation. Another evidence for it was the conference organized in Ashgabat by concerted efforts aiming to intensify the international energy dialogue.

In this regard Mr. Lamberto Zannier highly evaluated the peace-building policy and the active position of Turkmenistan that had put forward a number of important constructive initiatives to form a modern model of international partnership in this critical sphere and develop new approaches to achieving global energy security. Expressing all-round support of President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov’s energy policy with diversification of export of Turkmen energy to world markets as its critical aspect, the guest noted that European countries viewed Turkmenistan as one of the promising gas exporters and stood ready to discuss key options for cooperation of cooperation in this strategic sphere.

The leader of the Turkmen state and the OSCE Secretary General exchanged views on the prospects for enhancing mutually advantageous partnerships in the other priority areas, including the social, economic, humanitarian and other spheres. Underlining the effectiveness of the important joint projects implemented in recent years, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and his guest reaffirmed that the sides were ready to concert further efforts to ensure global security and stability through addressing such threats as illicit drug trafficking, international terrorism and transboundary crime.

Given a profound contribution that Turkmenistan made to Afghanistan’s economic revival the settlement of the situation in this country was mentioned as a critical aspect of cooperation within the organisation. In this regard the OSCE Secretary General said Turkmenistan’s initiatives to enhance electricity export to Afghanistan and construct the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India gas pipeline which would bring substantial economic benefits to the participating countries as well as all states in the region was filled with a specific content.

A focus of the discussion was the issues regarding the upcoming presidential elections which would be held in Turkmenistan in February 2012. OSCE representatives were invited to participate in the elections as independent observers.

Focusing on the outstanding accomplishments of independent neutral Turkmenistan recognized by the international community, the OSCE Secretary General expressed every success to the Turkmen people on the chosen path and the prosperity of the country.

Thanking for the kind words, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov expressed firm belief that fruitful cooperation with the OSCE that Turkmenistan viewed as a priority of its foreign policy strategy would be steadily intensified.
