President of the Republic of Hungary Pal Schmitt is arriving for official visit to Turkmenistan today. This is the first visit of the head of the friendly state to Turkmenistan, and its high status illustrates the considerable significance that the two countries attach to establishing closer multifaceted contacts and relations.

It is symbolic that the intensification of the Turkmen-Hungarian dialogue is taking place in the new historic period – the epoch of new Revival of the Turkmen state. In 2007 the Minister of Economy and Transport of the Republic of Hungary leading the government delegation visited Ashgabat and was received by President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov. In July 2008 President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and Prime Minister of the Republic of Hungary Ferenc Gyurcsany, who led a big government delegation consisting of the representatives of Hungarian ministries, departments and business companies, held the talks in Ashgabat. The frequent visits of the delegations representing the Hungarian business circles to Ashgabat evidence the growing interest of Hungarian businessmen in Turkmenistan’s economic projects in. The priority areas of cooperation between the two countries include the trade and economic, fuel and energy, transport and communications, agricultural, pharmaceutical, construction and tourism sectors.

Bilateral trade that has significantly intensified in recent years contributes to enhancing mutually beneficial cooperation. The chief exports from the Republic of Hungary to Turkmenistan include pharmaceutical products, manufacturing equipment and ferrous metal products.

The promotion of the political dialogue in the bilateral format and within the authoritative international organisations, particularly the UN and the European Union, testifies to a new quality of Turkmen-Hungarian relations as is evidenced by the meeting between President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and President of the Republic of Hungary Pal Schmitt which took place last December in Astana (Kazakhstan) within the Summit of Heads of State and Government of the OSCE participating states. As is known, these talks spotlighted the mutual willingness to establish the full-scale intergovernmental dialogue which, in mutual opinion, was based on the political will and the tremendous economic and resource potential of Turkmenistan and Hungary.

The foreign ministries of Turkmenistan and Hungary held the political consultations in January this year. The agenda focused on the current state and prospects of bilateral relations as well as critical regional and international issues of mutual interest.

The successful Turkmen-Hungarian intergovernmental relations is an immediate result of the Turkmen leader's policy of openness, progressive reforms and wide constructive partnership which has been recognized and supported by the world community and won Turkmenistan the high international prestige. Vivid evidence for it is an official visit of President of Hungary Pal Schmitt to Turkmenistan which is to become a milestone in the history of Turkmen-Hungarian cooperation.

The agenda of the upcoming top level talks is expected to include a wide range of issues of mutual interest and priority areas of further partnership. The other important aspects of mutually beneficial cooperation will be identified given the tremendous potential of the two countries and their collaboration within the European Union that Hungary presided over from January to July this year. For Turkmenistan views Europe as a key priority of its foreign policy strategy this of the President of Hungary to Turkmenistan can be regarded as a new step to deepen and expand the dialogue with the European Union.

One of the dominants of interstate relations is certainly humanitarian cooperation. All necessary prerequisites exist today to establish close contacts in the spheres of education, science and advanced technologies. Scientists and workers of culture and art of the Republic of Hungary take an active part in the international forums and festivals in Turkmenistan. Fruitful relations in the cultural sphere are to help the two nations to know each other better.

The official visit of President of the Republic of Hungary Pal Schmitt to Ashgabat will add a new important chapter to the history of the intergovernmental dialogue and strengthen the ties of friendship and mutual understanding between the two nations.
