Towards official visit of President of Turkmenistan to Pakistan

President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov is arriving for official visit to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan today.

This is the first visit of the leader of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov to Pakistan which is of great importance as a landmark in the history of bilateral relations.

The interstate dialogue between Turkmenistan and Pakistan is based on sincere and friendly relations rooted in historical and cultural affinities and common traditions. At the present stage they are characterized by mutual willingness to enhance mutually advantageous partnership which has the profound potential given the prospects for development of the two countries.

Since the establishment of diplomatic relations in May 1992 our states have signed thirty international documents which underlie the regulatory framework of bilateral collaboration characterized by positive dynamics in recent years. A new impetus to enhance cooperation was given during the meeting between President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and President of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari, which took place in March 2009 in Tehran where the leaders of the two states were attending the ECO Summit.

The Turkmenistan-Pakistan Intergovernmental Commission which aims its activity at identifying mutual interest and developing effective tools to fulfill common aims and plans facilitates diversified contacts in the political, trade, scientific and technical and humanitarian spheres.

An illustrative example of long-term interstate cooperation is the ambitious project of the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) gas pipeline project which is crucial to not only development and modernization of the economies of our countries but also satisfaction of growing energy needs of the participating countries. The implementation of this project will have a significant economic effect of international significance as well as promote stability and security in the region.

It should be noted that Turkmenistan and Pakistan shares each other’s views on topical issues of global and regional importance and show mutual interest as the neighbouring countries in building peace and stability in Afghanistan.

Humanitarian cooperation plays not less important role in fostering Turkmen-Pakistani collaboration along with the political sphere and significant economic component. Both countries demonstrate the commitment to promoting artistic and scientific contacts, cultural exchanges, intellectual and spiritual cooperation. Both Turkmenistan and Pakistan have the unique of tangible and intangible cultural heritage and wider cooperation based on historical and cultural affinities and scientific and education contacts will certainly promote mutual enrichment of the two nations.

Building relationships in the bi- and multi-lateral format, within the international organisations, particularly within the United Nations, Ashgabat and Islamabad expressed a willingness nowadays to intensify interstate relations and to further the political, economic and cultural dialogue as is evidenced by this visit of the Turkmen leader to Pakistan.

The agenda of the upcoming top level talks focuses on the current state of bilateral relations and the ways to enhance effective collaboration in the fields of priority importance of Turkmenistan and Pakistan, key sectors of the national economies and in the context of regional sustainable development and security.

Bilateral documents are expected to be signed during this visit.

New agreements are being developed in compliance with the national objectives set by our states at the present stage. They will certainly extend and strengthen the regulatory framework of Turkmen-Pakistani relations and fill them with a new content and quality.

There is no doubt that Turkmenistan and Pakistan have the profound potential for multifaceted partnership which once implemented will facilitate building the firmer and more reliable bridges of friendship and cooperation between the two countries.

Therefore, the official visit of President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan is aimed at opening up new horizons of relations, more actively using their resources and step up the ongoing processes of modernisation of economy, culture and other spheres of social life in the two countries.
