The ceremony of conferring the title of Honorary Professor of the Peking University to President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov took place in the people’s Assembly Hall in Beijing.
A Member of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China Mrs. Liu Yandong cordially and heartily greeted the distinguished guest at the entrance to the assembly hall. The representatives of the scientific and cultural elite of China, the members of the Turkmen government delegation and journalist, who had gathered there together, stood up while applauding the Turkmen leader.
In his opening remarks a representative of the Peking University, one o the largest research and education centres in the People’s Republic of China underlined a special contribution of the leader of the Turkmen state to promoting education and science, wide international cooperation in these spheres and read out the decision of the Academic Council to confer the title of Honorary Professor of the Peking University to President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov.
The diploma and badge was presented to the President of Turkmenistan to the applause of those present.
Congratulating the leader of the Turkmen state on this remarkable event, Member of the PRC State Council Mrs. Liu Yandong noted on behalf of the leadership of the People’s Republic of China and ceremony participants that the large-scale reforms were taking place on the initiative and under the leadership of President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov in the economic, education, scientific, health care sectors and the country had made significant progress in all of these spheres.
Dwelling upon the profound contribution the President of Turkmenistan had made to strengthen and foster the Turkmen-Chinese dialogue at the present stage, Mrs. Liu Yandong emphasized that contacts between scientists and cultural workers of the two countries stood as an essential component of bilateral relations.
Addressing the audience, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov expressed sincere gratitude for the high appreciation of his efforts to promote education. In this context the Turkmen leader emphasized that he considered it a great honour to receive the title of Honorary Professor of one of the most prestigious universities in the world.
“I view this academic title as a sign of respect to Turkmenistan, as a token of recognition of the achievements our country has gained in the spheres of science and education, as a symbol of centuries-old friendship between Turkmenistan and China,” said the leader of Turkmenistan.
President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov emphasized that science and education played a critical role in advancing the society and state towards the heights of progress and the prosperity of the nation. Attaching greater significance and prioritising the standards and quality of education, encouraging citizens, particularly youth, to contribute to the major trends in development of world science and technologies and facilitating involvement in these activities, promoting broader cultural and humanitarian relations require investment of state capital in the major and promising sphere – in an individual, in development of his or her creativity. In fact, this is investment in the future of the country, stated the Turkmen leader.
Promoting science and education is viewed in Turkmenistan as a state policy priority. The major aim of the state policy is to adopt high standard of teaching, support and encouragement of fundamental and applied research activities, computerization of all research and educational institutions, development of communications technologies, an exchange of scientific and education advances at the international level, wide cooperation with leading educational institutions in foreign countries.
Turkmen teachers, scientists and researchers in various spheres have established fruitful contacts with their counterparts in countries of Europe, Asia and America. International conferences, symposiums and other science forums held in Turkmenistan contribute to an effective exchange of experiences and adoption of advanced scientific methods.
Addressing the audience, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov urged to promote close bilateral contacts particularly between Magtumguly Turkmen State University and the Peking University and in the spheres of fundamental and applies research, oriental studies, history and archaeology, linguistics and study of culture emphasizing that this partnership would significantly benefit the peoples of Turkmenistan and China.
“Both Turkmenistan and China have the tremendous intellectual potential which will enable them to make significant progress through promoting science, education and culture. And today this is an essential condition of our outstanding achievements and steady advance,” concluded the Turkmen leader wishing every success in acquiring new knowledge to Chinese young people and new scientific discoveries to the teaching staff of the Peking University.
