President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov received Prime Minister of the Republic of Estonia Andrus Ansip, who had arrived in Ashgabat leading a high-level delegation, at the Oguzkhan palace complex. A focus of the talks was cooperation in the fuel and energy sector given the increasing energy demand in Estonia and Turkmenistan’s tremendous hydrocarbon potential. It was noted that the approaches to promoting fruitful cooperation would be thoroughly and substantially considered during the Turkmen-Estonian Business Forum and intergovernmental talks.

The sides also called for enhancing humanitarian cooperation, including through promoting cultural exchanges. At the conclusion of the meeting the President of Turkmenistan and the Prime Minister of the Republic of Estonia expressed belief that the interstate dialogue being brought nowadays to a qualitatively new level would be furthered successfully.

The talks were concluded with signing the Agreement on Cooperation between the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Turkmenistan and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Republic of Estonia and the Convention on the elimination of double taxation and prevention from income tax evasion between the Government of Turkmenistan and the Government of the Republic of Estonia.
During the talks the sides discussed the current state and prospects for bilateral partnership. The willingness to enhance Turkmen-Estonian cooperation and promote long-term contacts between ministries and departments and the business communities of the two countries in order to collaborate on ambitious economic projects and programmes in Turkmenistan was particularly expressed. During the meeting the Estonian Prime Minister was informed of major aspects of the domestic and foreign policies of the Turkmen state, the ongoing large-scale reforms and changes initiated by the Turkmen leader and the ongoing ambitious projects. In this context emphasis was placed on the social policy pursued by President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov to improve the welfare and life quality of Turkmen citizens. The Chairperson of the Mejlis briefed Mr. Andrus Ansip of the ongoing national social and economic development programmes, the construction of schools, kindergartens, higher educational institutions, recreational and health centres, sports facilities, apartment houses launched throughout the country and unprecedented social benefits provided to citizens of Turkmenistan.
Touching upon the existing potential of bilateral cooperation, the sides focused on a critical role of strengthening inter-parliamentary contacts. The Prime Minister of the Republic of Estonia said the business circles in his country were interested in establishing a full-scale dialogue with Turkmenistan. The spheres of science and information and communications technologies, health care and tourism, the use of renewable sources of energy were mentioned as priority fields of cooperation. The possibilities for enhancing a cultural dialogue that facilitated strengthening the ties of friendship and mutual understanding between the two peoples were also discussed.
