President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov received the Minister of Roads and Urban Development of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Abbas Ahmad Akhoundi. The guest conveyed greetings from the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Hassan Rouhani, to the Turkmen leader.

Abbas Ahmad Akhoundi expressed to President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov his congratulations on the opening of the new International seaport in Turkmenbashi. He stressed that Iran attaches great importance to strengthening good-neighborly relations with Turkmenistan that is developing dynamically and has a tremendous economic potential.

A vivid exchange of views took place during the meeting. The sides discussed intensification of cooperation in the sphere of transport where Turkmenistan proposed several constructive initiatives on shaping the regional and international transport and communication infrastructure. A clear example of successful combination of efforts is the construction of the Kazakhstan–Turkmenistan–Iran railway.

The commissioning of the new International seaport in Turkmenbashi will also promote intensification of commercial and economic ties both between the Caspian littoral states and in Eurasia as a whole. Particularly, this will help develop waterway links with Iranian ports of Enzeli and Neka, and increase manifold the international multimodal cargo transportation through the port of Bandar Abbas in the Persian Gulf.

In this regard the sides noted the important role of the upcoming summit of heads of transport authorities of the member states of the Economic Cooperation Organization that will particularly consider infrastructure projects aimed at economic integration of the countries of the region.
