Briefing on the first Caspian Sea Economic Forum in Tashkent

On April 30, the briefing dedicated to the first Caspian Sea Economic Forum was organized at the conference hall of the Embassy of Turkmenistan in the Republic of Uzbekistan. The representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan, the Institute for Strategic and Regional Studies, the ministries of investment and foreign trade, economy, transport, as well as the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the media attended the event.

Speaking at the briefing, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Turkmenistan to Uzbekistan Yazguly Mammedov noted that President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov in 2014, during the IV Summit of the heads of the Caspian states proposed to develop agreements in the fields of transport, trade and economic cooperation in the Caspian Sea and organize the Caspian Economic Forum as a mechanism for the implementation of these documents.

During the V Caspian Summit, held in Aktau on August 12, 2018, the heads of the Caspian countries signed the Convention on the Legal Status of the Caspian Sea - a basic document that secures the legal norms of interaction in various fields as well as the Communiqué that reflects the proposal of President Gurbanguly Berdymuhamedov to hold the first Caspian Economic Forum in 2019 in Turkmenistan. The Agreements between the Governments of the Caspian littoral states on trade and economic cooperation and the Agreement between the Governments of the Caspian littoral states on cooperation in the field of transport, drafted on the initiative of the President of Turkmenistan, were also signed during the V Caspian Summit.

In this regard, Ambassador Yazguly Mammedov focused the attention of the participants on the fact that the issues related to the Caspian region occupied a special place in the foreign policy strategy of Turkmenistan.

At the briefing, the emphasis was put on the potential of the Caspian region in the world geopolitical and geo-economic processes, which determines the importance of the integrated approach of the Caspian littoral states to creating transport and transit corridors of international importance and developing an effective model of economic interaction.

It was underlined that the upcoming forum would provide the platform for multilateral economic dialogue with the extensive participation of cabinet officers, businessmen, scientists, representatives of international organizations. The forum agenda will focus on the creation of conditions for large projects, the role of the economy of the Caspian region in a global context, the investment attractiveness in the oil and gas, electricity, transport, trade, agro-industrial, tourism and other industries.

In conclusion of the briefing, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Turkmenistan to Uzbekistan answered a number of questions about the Turkmen-Uzbek cooperation and the upcoming forum. The event was covered in the media and broadcast on the central TV channels of Uzbekistan.
