First library in Amu Darya Valley opened 100 years ago

The first library in Turkmenabat (then the city was called Chardzhui) opened its doors in early October 1919. The library fund numbered over 5.5 thousand books.

Literary education is of great importance in the formation of worldview, the continuity of mental values. And in this aspect, the library network of Turkmenabat, as well as throughout the country, has received a powerful impetus for development in the last decade, its material and technical base is modernized, modern methodological developments and digital technologies are introduced in its system.

A new building of the velayat library was opened in the administrative center of the eastern region of the country on October 18, 2014. The President of Turkmenistan attended the solemn ceremony of opening the library.

The total area of the library is almost 11,500 square meters. Today, the library fund numbers 300,000 books. There are 11 reading halls, equipped with technical facilities, where 450 people can simultaneously study, a conference room, an Internet class, a cinema hall, and other premises in the library. The library fund also keeps old folios. A powerful German telescope is located on the top floor of the “temple of a book”, with the help of which schoolchildren and students study astronomy and conduct observations of celestial bodies.

Today, there are 53 libraries in cities, districts, towns and villages of the Amu Darya Valley. Their total fund is almost 1.350 million books. At present, the books are digitalized.
