Turkmenistan takes higher positions in the Global Peace Index

Turkmenistan went up seven positions in 2021 Global Peace Index - combined rating, which measures countries’ peacefulness in 23 criteria. In 2021, our country has taken the 109th position among 163 countries in the rating while last year, Turkmenistan occupied the 116th position. This information is given in 2021 Report of the Global Peace Index.

The Global Peace Index is an index developed by sociologists and economists of international expert group of Institute for Economics and Peace together with the Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies of Sydney University, which according to their opinion characterizes the level of levels of peacefulness of the countries and regions.

Pooled index, which measures peacefulness of the countries, includes 23 quantitative and qualitative indicators, each of indicators’ score is measured on a scale of 1 – 5 – the lower is a score, the safer is in the country. The average score of Turkmenistan is 2.15.

It is worth to mention that Iceland remains the most peaceful country, which keeps the first position since 2018. It is followed by New Zealand, Denmark, Portugal, Slovenia, Austria, Switzerland, Ireland, Czech Republic and Canada in the first ten. Afghanistan has remained on the last, 163rd position.

Baltic countries – Estonia on the 30th position, Latvia on the 35th position and Lithuania on the 37th position, were recognized as the most peaceful among post-soviet countries. Kazakhstan was taken over by Moldova, which is on the 59th position. The rest of post-soviet countries - Kyrgyzstan is on the 76th position, Georgia on the 89th, Uzbekistan on the 90th, Armenia on the 94th, Tajikistan on the 97th, Belarus on the 117th, Azerbaijan on the 121th, Ukraine on the 143rd and Russia on the 154th position.

The peace Index has been developed by an international group of experts from peace research institutes and analytical centers from different countries of the world under the aegis of the Institute for Peace and Economy. Calculation of the index is made based on statical data of international organizations such as the UN, World Bank, Transparency International and other as well as academic and research institutes of number of countries. Political and public activists including Noble Prize laureates, former Presidents of USA and Finland Jimmy Carter and Martti Ahtisaari, the Dalai Lama, Queen Noor of Jordan, former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan have been involved in work on the project.

The index is collected and collated by the Economist Intelligence Unit (Analytical division of British Economist Magazine). During preparation of the rating, all countries covered by the study are analyzed in several developed criteria and combination of internal and external factors.
