Ancient art – eternal art

Allan Rozyyev, a master of gargy tuyduk, who lives in Bayrach village of Tagtabazar etrap, after playing on the tuyduk, said: “It must be that the first Turkmen musical instrument was tuyduk. People may have done this to suppress their grief. It is a tool of the poor, without cost, go out into the field and make as many as you need.”.

Although it may seem easy to create tuzduk, this job is only for the master, and not everyone can play it.

Muhammet Saparov, teacher of the bakhshi department of the specialized music school named after Yolaman Hummayev in Mary city, a master who has gained fame in our country in the field of tuyduk making and playing it. He graduated the bakhshi department of this school in 1997. His teacher and mentor is maestro Amannazar Atayev, the horoned bakhshi of Turkmenistan, who works in this school. Today, he takes the place of a well-known mentor and teaches young talents to play dutar and tuyduk.

Meret Durdymammet, his countryman, taught him to play the tuyduk before he entered music school. The well-known tuyduk player from Tagtabazar has been a great help in improving the playing of the tuyduk, as well as in the making tuyduk. Ashyr Yazmyradov, a teacher of the tuyduk playing department of the Ashgabat specialized music school named after Danatar Ovezov, is one of his most respected mentors. In addition, he is a demanding and sensitive expert in the history of Muhammad's tuyduk art. The tuyduks used by the students of Ashyr-teacher are mostly from the hands of Muhammed.

We met Muhammad Saparov when some of his students gathered around him and learned how to do “dilli” and “gargy” tuyduk. The length of “gargy” tuyduk is 750-800 mm and is made from the 6 or 7-knee “gargy” reed. To make the sound melodious and to blow comfortably, at the end of the instrument is installed the medal tip. It is called “nay”. The “gargy” tuyduk is also called as “nay tuydyk”. On the face surface of tuyduk there are 5-6 holes, and 1 hole is on the back. It is held in contact with the front teeth and is blown away by strong airflow over the tongue.

“Dilli” tuyduk is made from the one-knee thin reed, its length is 150-160 mm. The “tongue” of the “dilli” tuyduk is cut close the upper edge of the tuyduk. “Dilli” tuyduk has 3-4 holes.

Here, before us, 3-4 “dilli” tuyduk were made. Completing the previously started tuyduk, they checked the sound of the finished musical instruments. We watched the Muhammad teacher's disciples play music. We were delighted to hear one of his most talented students, a fourth-year student of Babageldy Chokhov, was playing the tyuduk and singing.

The ancient tradition of the Dovletdurdy tuyduk player, whose name is embedded in the legends, and his disciple Yazmuhammed Kose, Baky Mashag, and many other masters, passed down from generation to generation, is still cherished and revered today. Thanks to the efforts of our esteemed President, tuyduk, which is a first Turkmen musical instrument, and the masters of this magical art are given a worthy place in the musical sights, concerts and exhibitions of national art, holding at the state level. Diplomas and prizes received by Muhammad Saparov and his students at such events adorn the corridors of the specialized music school named after Yolaman Hummayev in Mary city.
