International partners of Turkmenistan are promoting the development of the National Greenhouse Gas Inventory System

Speaking at the 28th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, President Serdar Berdimuhamedov said that Turkmenistan officially accedes to the Global Methane Commitment and will continue to cooperate with international organizations and partner states to implement it.

In this regard, an important event was the signing on the 7th of December, 2023 by the UN Development Program and the British Embassy in Turkmenistan of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to continue joint work on the third stage of supporting the development of the project of the National Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions Inventory System in Turkmenistan.

The signed document provides for assistance in the development of a draft of a new National Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Inventory System, which will allow the Government of Turkmenistan to effectively fulfill the conditions of the Global Methane Commitment. The creation of such a system will also contribute to the practical implementation of the country’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), approved by the President of Turkmenistan in 2022 as part of the obligations under the Paris Climate Agreement. This strategic document provides for a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 20 percent in 2030 relative to 2010 levels.

The greenhouse gas inventory system will improve national reporting to track progress towards NDC targets and revise future targets, leading to improved national development policy making overall. A permanent and well-functioning greenhouse gas inventory system will enable relevant ministries and government agencies to timely estimate and record the amount of greenhouse gases actually emitted, and take coordinated action at the sectoral level to support overall national efforts to address climate challenges.
