On the 10th of December, Ashgabat hosted the «Winter Cup 2023» tournament based on the sports version of the intellectual game «What? Where when?».
The event, organized by the Delegation of the European Union to Turkmenistan, was dedicated to the celebration of Human Rights Day and the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. In accordance with the given theme of the tournament, the teams had to answer specially prepared questions related to the EU countries and the concept of human rights in the world.
More than 20 teams consisting of the adults and youngest scholars of Turkmenistan took part in the intellectual battles. The game was watched by a competent jury, which included Honoured Artist of Turkmenistan Vladimir Mkrtumov, representatives of the leading teams of experts in Ashgabat «Old Guard» Roman Bespalov and Sapar Annarejepov team «Altyn Asyr».
The tournament was divided into three rounds. Game host Hemra Atabayev read out the questions in two languages – Turkmen and Russian.
Several teams emerged as leaders by answering more questions correctly in the first two rounds. However, only two made it to the finals - the team of experts «Chocolate Owl» and the team «Triumph», representing the Turkmen State University named after Magtymguly. The main struggle broke out between them for the right to become champions of the tournament.
The final game up to 6 points to determine the winner turned out to be the most intense. The intrigue remained until the end. Any of the teams could become the winner.
The team of experts «Chocolate Owl» managed to be the first to dial the required number of points, thereby determining the outcome of the game and becoming the winner of the «2023 Winter Cup».
– Our team partly owes its appearance to the «Winter Cup» of the European Union, says Gleb Andreyev, captain of the «Chocolate Owl» team. – We played our first successful intellectual game at the EU Cup on the 19th of December, 2021. This tournament brought us a pleasant and unexpected victory, which was the result of the well-coordinated work of team members - Davut Yklymov, Sevil Tagiyeva, Anastasiya Kostina, Svetlana Chirtsova. Perhaps the one who wants it most wins. But the rival teams should also be given their due. The young guys played very well and did not let us relax.
So, according to the results of the «Winter Cup 2023», she took second place Team «Triumph» of representatives of the Turkmen State University named after Magtymguly. On third positions – the «N’Z’ Best Team» team, including students of the Turkmen National Institute of World Languages named after Dovletmammet Azady.
