Turkmenistan plans to strengthen interaction with the OSCE

Turkmenistan plans to expand with the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE). Deputy Prime Minister and Head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan R. Meredov announced measures taken in this direction at a government meeting via video link.

A number of proposals for further development of partnership with the OSCE were presented for consideration by the President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov. In particular, in order to reveal the important role of Turkmen neutrality in ensuring peace, security and sustainable development, it is proposed to hold an international conference «The Role of Neutral States in Strengthening Security and Trust in the OSCE Region» in Ashgabat in the first half of this year. It is planned to invite permanent representatives of the OSCE member states to participate in the event.

The agenda will include issues such as the main directions of the «Global Security Strategy» initiated by Turkmenistan, as well as the use of important mechanisms of neutrality in resolving various international crises through political and diplomatic means, and the revival of the culture of political dialogue.

In addition, a proposal was made to organize a visit to our country by the OSCE General Secretary in March of this year with the aim of developing and enhancing ties between Turkmenistan and this structure.

In addition, a promising task is to intensify the participation of our state in activities carried out to combat terrorism within the framework of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe and to build up partnership with the Committee on Combating Terrorism under this Assembly. In this regard, it is proposed to organize a visit to our country by the Vice President of the PA and the head of the above-mentioned Committee in April of this year.

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs voiced the initiative to hold a regional meeting of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly in Ashgabat in May of this year in order to strengthen bilateral cooperation in supporting the policy of neutrality of Turkmenistan.

Noting that the development of relations with international organizations, including the OSCE, is one of the priority areas of our country’s foreign policy, President Serdar Berdimuhamedov approved the proposals presented. Having focused on the importance of further strengthening the partnership with this Organization in all areas, the head of state instructed the Deputy Prime Minister and the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to ensure a high level of implementation of the planned events.
