Reforms of the epoch of progress: sports sphere

The active consecutive policy in the sphere of development of physical culture and sports implemented in Turkmenistan allowed the country to nominate its candidacy for hosting one of the largest international sports events – the V Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games, which by decision of the Olympic Council of Asia will be held in Ashgabat in 2017 and for the first time in history - in the Central Asian region. The venue for the large-scale sports event will be the unique Olympic Village. As is known, construction of the village started two years ago on the initiative of President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov.

This grandiose complex that has no analogues in the region will symbolize the aspiration of the country towards new sports achievements. It will include over 30 facilities equipped in accordance with the requirements of the International Olympic Committee. Among them are indoor track and field complex, and water complex, outdoor water complex and aqua park, indoor tennis court with seats, a hotel, cultural and trading centers, outdoor tennis courts, ring cycle tracks, ring tracks, outdoor and underground car park, and a number of other facilities.

A new powerful incentive of the state significance that is aimed at supporting sport and strengthening health among the population in Turkmenistan was the Resolution on approving the State Programme on development of sports and training of qualified sportsmen in Turkmenistan in 2012-2016 signed in May of the current year.

During the meeting on the issues of developing the spheres of science, education, health, sports, tourism and culture held on August 16, defining the priority tasks set to the State Committee of Turkmenistan for Sport, the President of Turkmenistan underlined that, first of all, the State Committee should intensify its work on revealing and educating gifted and promising young sportsmen, as well as popularizing motor racing and cycling, archery, fencing, water sports, rowing, hockey, figure skating, cycling and horse riding among the youth.

It was noted during the meeting that it was necessary to accelerate the paces and widen the scales of works on construction of sports facilities supplied with all necessary equipment for practicing various sports in Ashgabat and administrative centers of the regions as well as to open a High Sports School of Turkmenistan. It was also underlined during the meeting that new weightlifting sports school meeting the high international standards should be built in Dashoguz, Mary and Balkan Velayats and a specialized modern chess and checkers school – in Ashgabat.
