One of the important aspects of implementation of the concept of the presidency of Turkmenistan in the CIS in 2012 is the humanitarian sphere – cooperation in the sphere of science and high technologies, education and culture, sports and environmental protection given the rich experience of cooperation of the CIS member states.

The events organized on occasion of announcing the city of Mary a cultural capital of the CIS in 2012 occupied a special place in the programme of cooperation in the sphere of culture. Starting from the official ceremony of announcing the city of Mary a cultural capital of the CIS in 2012 on April 30, a number of international forums were held in this dynamically developing Turkmen city.

Among the large forums held in Mary, the International scientific conference “Ancient Merv is the centre of the world civilization” taken place on June 6 became an important landmark in the large-scale work on studying the historical and cultural heritage of our country. On July 21, the cultural capital of the Commonwealth for 2012 cordially greeted popular artists of the CIS member states and masters of art of Turkmenistan.

The humanitarian vector of the concept of the presidency of Turkmenistan in the CIS in 2012 was reflected in the events taken place in the Turkmen capital. Among them is the photo exhibition “CIS member states in photocamera objective” arranged at the Museum of Fine Arts of Turkmenistan to mark the 20th anniversary of the CIS.

Within the framework of the humanitarian sphere of the presidency of Turkmenistan in the CIS in 2012, a children’s creative forum was successfully held in the Avaza National tourist zone at the picturesque Caspian Coast.

Turkmenistan provides comprehensive support to successful implementation of the Strategy for developing the physical culture and sports among the CIS member states till 2020. The International Football Tournament for the Cup of the President of Turkmenistan took place in Ashgabat on September 20-30. Nine youth teams representing the CIS member states competed for the honorary trophy. President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov attended the solemn ceremony of opening of the International Football Tournament at the Ashgabat Stadium.

On October 15-16 Ashgabat hosted the VII CIS Forum of Creative and Scientific Intelligentsia. The forum brought together numerous delegates including prominent politicians, workers of culture and art, scientists, heads of intergovernmental structures, international and public organisations in the Turkmen capital.

The importance of this large event in the CIS space was underlined by participation of President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov.

Seven thematic sessions as well as meetings of the International Association of Academies of Sciences and Eurasian Association of Universities, the CIS Council of Rectors of the National Conservatories and other international associations took place within the framework of the forum.

The solemn ceremony of awarding diplomas to the winners of the “Commonwealth of Debuts” Prize established by the Council for Humanitarian Cooperation of the CIS Member States and the Interstate Humanitarian Cooperation Fund of CIS Member States took place on the first day of the forum. That day, the President of Turkmenistan awarded the Bitaraplyk Order, one of the highest state awards of Turkmenistan, to Chairman of the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation Sergey Naryshkin for the outstanding contribution in the sphere of economy, culture and international relations. The Turkmen leader also awarded the Ruhubelent Order (High Spirituality) to Chairperson of the Management Council of multitier programme on Spiritual and Moral Culture of Younger Generation of Russia Svetlana Medvedeva.

Sociologists and politicians highly appreciate the role and significance of the presidency of Turkmenistan in the CIS in 2012 as well as the high organizational level and efficiency of the events and meetings taken place within the framework of the presidency of Turkmenistan in the CIS.
