It is quite natural that the ‘information peak’ fell on February 12 - the day of the presidential elections held in the solemn atmosphere in the country and abroad, at 29 polling stations opened at the diplomatic representatives and consular offices of Turkmenistan in foreign countries.

Expressing best wishes to the other presidential candidates, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov noted that all his rivals in the election campaign were the respectable people. That is illustrated by the fact that all the presidential candidates were nominated by public organizations and initiative groups of citizens. “In spite of the unusual cold weather in Turkmenistan, the presidential elections are held in a festive atmosphere”, reported the RIA-Novosti Russian news agency, noting that by the middle of the day, almost half the electorate had voted.
“According to the Central Commission for Election and Referenda, 2.987 million of citizens in Turkmenistan are eligible to vote. As compared to the 2007elections, the electorate increased as many as 400,000 voters”, reported the ITAR-TASS News Agency. The numerous materials provided by media during the day, the Central Commission for Election and Referenda of Turkmenistan recognized the presidential election to be valid. 237,000,892, or more than a half of all registered voters - 68.22 percent of eligible voters cast their votes by 2 p.m. local time.

Foreign media underlined the fact that there were a lot of young citizens of Turkmenistan, who voted for the first time. The valuable presents were awarded to them in memory of such a remarkable event in their life. As is known, election commission members carried out the explanatory work for young voters who reached the age of 18. For these purposes election commission members held meetings to explain their rights and obligations as citizens of Turkmenistan and eligible voters and the importance of their active involvement in life of the state and society to youth.
The world media focused on the fact that more than 2,300 national observers, including the representatives of the Democratic Party of Turkmenistan and other public organizations observed the election process.
It was noted that these days the CIS Observaer Mission, the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (OSCE/ODIHR) and the representatives of the Middle East and Western Asia Department of Political Affairs of the UN Secretariat arrived in the country to monitor the presidential elections.
“The election of the President of Turkmenistan is held in a proper manner and a festive atmosphere, the voter turnout for the presidential election is high”, Sergey Lebedev, Chairman of the Executive Committee, the CIS Executive Secretary reported to the Interfax Russian news agency. He said that the voters’ turnout ranged from 25 to 45 percent at polling stations throughout the country by midday.
The Head of the CIS Observer Mission for the election of the President of Turkmenistan including 63 observers from the CIS countries, the Interparliamentary Assembly of Member Nations of the Commonwealth of Independent States, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Belarusian-Russian Union, the Executive Committee of the Commonwealth of Independent States noted that the polling stations he visited within the last days were located in the places fit for the election and were supplied with the necessary equipment and devices. Reminding that the CIS Observer Mission will present final conclusions and evaluation of the results of monitoring of the election campaign in Turkmenistan in its final document after the elections, S. Lebedev expressed the hope that the results of the presidential election would offer a powerful incentive to implementation of the concept of the presidency of Turkmenistan in the CIS aimed at further improvement of the versatile integration cooperation of the CIS countries.
Earlier, based on the information received from the CIS Mission Headquarters, the world media reported that the high level of organization and congruence in the work of election commissions was ensured at the preparation stage of the election. The Mission observers freely visited the election commissions, received the necessary information and data on the course of the election campaign, met with the authorized representatives of presidential candidates, voters and representatives of local authorities and local governments.
“The CIS Observer Mission welcomed the measures taken by the Government, including the executive authorities of Turkmenistan, the Central Commission for Election and Referenda of Turkmenistan in order to ensure free, fair and democratic elections”, the report stated.
Such a high evaluation given by independent observers as well as the media interest worldwide proved the election of President of Turkmenistan to be free, democratic and held in compliance with the current election law of Turkmenistan and international law, was an important stage on the path of strengthening the democratic foundations of the state, raising civic consciousness of citizens of Turkmenistan, the country that faces the future with confidence.
