Counting on deeper and complex processing of natural gas with a view of increase in export of share of products of its processing, Turkmenistan plans to take the role of competitive manufacturer of the finished products instead of the role of supplier of raw material, and take worthy place on more profitable market of chemical products.
Alongside with increase of production volumes of hydrocarbons and development of pipeline network, it was created in the country the natural gas processing infrastructure. Within the years of independence, the facilities for production of liquid hydrocarbon gases have raised nearly by 20 times. Presently, the task of conversion of natural gas into liquid and/or solid high-quality export petrochemical products. It is carried out the works for deep processing of natural gas in different directions. We have all conditions for maintenance of high profitability of gas-chemical production and increase of potential of income of its products.
It is the closeness of transit-transport infrastructure to gas deposits, availability of technological components (water, steam, electric power) in essential volume, guaranteed supply with raw material for long-term prospect.
On technologies of gas processing, it is possible to highlight in Turkmenistan the following major directions: primary processing of raw gas; complex processing of “fat” gases, differing with high content of ethane, propane and butane; conversion of natural gas into liquid state; physicochemical conversion of natural gas into different synthetic organic products.
At present, the technology of gas conversion into carbamide successfully develops in the country. It was outlined rapid adoption of innovation technologies of gas conversion into methanol, gasoline, diesel fuel, olefins and others. Concerning the issues of gas conversion, the Institute of Oil and Gas actively cooperates with the leading research institutes and engineering companies.
With commissioning of super-giant gas-condensate field “Galkynysh”, the interest increases in technologies of natural gas purification from acid gas, excepting the necessity of subsequent processing of hydrogen sulfide into elemental sulfur. Main condition for complex processing is the availability in the composition of gas no less than 3 percent of ethane, propane and other homologs of methane, which are major and important raw material for production of olefins - feed stock for production of polymers and other valuable products.
For the near future, Turkmenistan processes enough resources of such gases. Here, the main task is the selection of more prospective and profitable for our country technologies, products and configurations of gas-chemical complexes.
At present, on the coast of the Caspian Sea in Kiyanly settlement, it is carried out the construction of the first gas-chemical complex designed for complex processing of 5 billion cubic meters of gas per year, and production of 386 thousand tons of polyethylene and 81 thousand tons of polypropylene per year. Here, it is also provided the realization of the second gas-chemical complex of similar capacity for production of polyvinyl chloride, acrylonitrile fibers, elastomers and others.
Construction of the third gas-chemical complex will be based on complex processing of gas of Central Garagum deposits and naphtha (volatile fluid hydrocarbon mixture) from gas-chemical complex on production of liquid fuel. Here, it is offered the production of polyethylene, ethylene glycol, caustic soda and several other important products.
Production of synthetic gasoline advances more actively in conversion direction of gas processing. The first plant on gas conversion into gasoline is constructed in Akhal province. The enterprise will process annually 1 billion 785 million cubic meters of natural gas and produce 600 thousand tons of A-92 gasoline, corresponding with high ecological requirements.
In 2018, here, it will be erected a complex of modern technological installations, additional facilities, technical systems, including unique water purification system.
For production of alkenes, Turkmenistan processes enough resources of fat gas. But, as far as their use, it will be also essential other sources of alkenes. In this connection, project of alkenes production by catalytic conversion of methane is of great interest.
It is worth mentioning that growth of demand for alkenes and polyolefin is closely connected with growth of economy of Turkmenistan, particularly such sectors as capital construction, production of pipe products and processing industry as a whole. Profitability typical to this production increases by utilization of its facilities.
Important significance of these projects – innovative development of Turkmenistan, opportunity to demonstrate to entire world the perfect example of efficient use of natural resources in the interests of the country’s citizens.
It is necessary to underline that realization of projects of gas conversion and export of products of gas processing will demand the expansion of transport communications with access to neighboring states and large seaports.
“Open doors” policy, being pursued by President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, policy of wide international cooperation, favorable investment climate created in the country, expansion of geography of transnational transit-transport corridors with access to neighboring states and large seaports play major role in this direction. It will contribute to the constructive solution of issues of export of products of gas processing.
