Bronze medals were awarded to Turkmen tennis players at the junior tournament (U-14) of the World Championship of the Asia/Oceania qualification zone, which ended in Colombo and was held with the participation of representatives of 15 countries. On the way to this success, both our men's and women's teams stopped one step away from the final.
In the group, Turkmen boys won three wins with the same score of 3:0 over the teams of Macau, Cambodia and Saudi Arabia, then in the quarterfinals they defeated their peers in Nepal - 3:0, and in the semifinals with the same score they lost to the future winner of the tournament - the team of Singapore. In the other semi-final, Kyrgyzstan defeated Sri Lanka.
Turkmen tennis players on the way to the playoffs after defeating the Macau national teams - 3:0 and defeat from the Indonesian team - 0:3 won against their peers from Kyrgyzstan - 2:1.
In the competition of women's teams, the playoff matches began with the 1/2 finals, in which our compatriots lost 1:2 to their rivals from Malaysia, who later became the winners of the tournament. In the other semi-final, Singapore defeated Indonesia.
As the correspondent of «GA» was informed in the Tennis Federation of Turkmenistan, according to the regulations of the World Junior Championship Tennis, the teams that lost in the semifinals were awarded bronze medals, regardless of the outcome of the matches for 3rd place, which had only a rating value.
In the men's duel for the 3rd place, the Turkmen team defeated the hosts of the tournament, tennis players from Sri Lanka, with a score of 2:1. In the first singles match, Selim Chagylov lost to Akhil Kalil - 2:6, 1:6. In the second, Imran Ahundov equalized the situation - 1:1, taking over Mexico Vikramasinghe - 2:6, 7:6, 6:2. The match in doubles turned out to be decisive, in which S. Chagylov and I. Ahundov were stronger than A. Kalil and M. Wikramasinghe - 6:3, 6:4.
In the women's duel for 3rd place, our team met for the second time at the tournament with the Indonesian national team, losing this time with a minimum score of 1:2. Here, the fate of the match was decided in singles, in which Sabrina Rahmanova lost to Milanese Briana Susanto - 0:6.4:6, and Ilima Huseynova lost to Gwen Emilia Kurniavan - 4:6, 3:6. In doubles, Natalya Martynova and Ilima Huseynova played the ball, taking over their rivals, but this did not affect the outcome of the match.
In the men's final, the Singapore team defeated the Kyrgyz team - 2:1, and in the women's final - the Malaysian tennis players prevailed over their rivals from Singapore - 3:0.
Remind that the duties of the captain of our women's team at the ITF World Junior Tennis tournament for players under 14 years old were performed by the first racket of Turkmenistan Yuriy Rogusskiy, and the captain of the men's team was the master of sports, judge of the national category Andrey Dovmatov. Igor Zubkov, a member of the referee board of the National Tennis Federation, headed the delegation of Turkmenistan in Sri Lanka.
