On 30 January 2026, the Fifth meeting of the Joint Turkmen-Uzbek Intergovernmental Commission on Water Management Issues was held in Khiva. The Turkmen side was led by Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan T.Atahallyyev, and the Uzbek side by Advisor to the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan on Agricultural Development Sh.Ganiev. The commission's work was attended by heads and representatives of relevant ministries, departments and state structures of the two countries responsible for water resources management, irrigation and environmental protection.
In their speeches, the co-chairs of the commission noted the high level of Turkmen-Uzbek relations, based on the principles of good neighbourliness, mutual trust, equality and consideration of the national interests of the parties. They emphasised their shared desire to expand and deepen productive cooperation not only in the water sector, but also in various areas of economic, infrastructural and humanitarian cooperation.
The parties also stressed that sustainable and mutually beneficial cooperation between Turkmenistan and the Republic of Uzbekistan in the field of water resources management is of strategic importance for ensuring food security, sustainable agricultural development and socio-economic stability in the region.
During the meeting, the parties exchanged views on the introduction of modern technologies for rational water use, the improvement of mechanisms for monitoring and accounting for water resources, and the development of human resources in the water sector. Particular attention was paid to issues of adaptation to climate change and minimisation of related risks for sustainable water supply.
The parties confirmed their mutual commitment to holding regular bilateral consultations, meetings of the intergovernmental commission and joint events, as well as to further strengthening the legal and institutional framework for cooperation.
The meeting took place in a constructive atmosphere, reflecting the consistent and systematic nature of the Turkmen-Uzbek strategic dialogue. At the end of the meeting, the parties signed the Protocol of the Fifth meeting of the Joint Turkmen-Uzbek Intergovernmental Commission on Water Management Issues.
