On February 25, 2026 Permanent Representative of Turkmenistan to the United Nations Office at Geneva V.Hajiyev, met with the Secretary General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Martin Chungong. About this reports MFA of Turkmenistan. 

During the meeting, the Turkmen side confirmed Turkmenistan’s readiness to host the 16th Summit of Women Speakers of Parliament and officially delivered messages from the Chairperson of the Mejlis of Turkmenistan addressed to the leadership of the Union. The hosting of this forum is regarded as a key milestone in implementing the initiative of the President of Turkmenistan to declare 2028 as the Year of International Law, proposed during the 80th session of the UN General Assembly.

The IPU Secretary General welcomed the initiative with appreciation and expressed full support for Turkmenistan’s intention to host the upcoming Summit. It was emphasized that the proposal to declare 2028 as the Year of International Law is timely and aligns with current global demands to strengthen the rule of law, institutional stability, and inclusive development.

Particular attention was paid to the growing role of Central Asian states in enhancing inter-parliamentary dialogue. It was noted that Turkmenistan’s proactive engagement on the international stage contributes to promoting a constructive agenda and sustaining peace through the tools of parliamentary diplomacy.

In conclusion, the parties reaffirmed their mutual interest in further deepening the partnership and agreed to maintain close cooperation in preparation for the upcoming Summit.
