The first team chess championship in the history of independence of Turkmenistan will be held in Ashgabat from the 22nd to 28th of March, 2026.
The main purpose of this competition is to popularise the intellectual sport, develop the team format of the game and attract a wide range of organisations and companies to the chess movement.
The championship will be held according to established international standards with a time control of 90 minutes for each player until the end of the game with an additional 30 seconds for each turn.
Matches in each round will be played on six boards, with women playing on the fifth and juniors under 20 playing on the sixth. The team also includes three reserve players and a captain without the right to participate in games. At the same time, the organisers of the championship allow the inclusion of foreign players in the squad – any invited players who are not directly related to the organisation declaring the team.
According to the rules of the tournament, a team will be awarded 2 points for a win, 1 for a draw and 0 for a defeat.
Following the results of the championship, the winning team will be eligible to represent Turkmenistan at the world and Asian team championships.
In addition, a special nomination «The best team of the private sector» is provided, which will mark the strongest team among companies and private organisations.
The Chess federation of Turkmenistan plans to make this tournament an annual event in order to systematically develop team chess and expand the circle of participants in the competition.
To date, 5 teams have confirmed their participation in the championship. There is still room for 3 more teams in the tournament.
