In today’s world, integration into global trade chains is a key factor for economic growth. In an interview with a correspondent of “GA”, Elena Butrimova, Head of the Eastern Europe and Central Asia Section at the International Trade Centre (ITC), spoke about the prospects opening up for Turkmenistan and the current stage of its rapprochement with the World Trade Organization (WTO).
According to the expert, Turkmenistan has enormous untapped potential beyond the oil and gas sector. The ITC also places strong emphasis on supporting agriculture and the processing industry.
“Turkmenistan’s potential is immense. The country has every opportunity to significantly increase its exports of food products,” noted E. Butrimova.
However, the expert added that entering promising markets such as the European Union requires compliance with strict regulations.
“The key aspects of this work include two rules. First is compliance with EU quality standards, which is a priority area for Turkmen producers. Second is the study of consumer demand. Numerous enterprises in Turkmenistan already produce a wide range of goods that are in demand in Europe; the important thing is to establish proper logistics,” said the ITC representative.
According to E. Butrimova, textile products occupy a special place. Thanks to the high quality of cotton and the modernization of production facilities, Turkmen textiles are now in consistently high demand on the global market.
One of Ashgabat’s most well-considered steps is its intention to join the WTO. E. Butrimova emphasized that this is a multifaceted process requiring consistency and structural reforms. As noted, historical experience shows that for most countries the path from application to full membership takes between 15 and 20 years. Nevertheless, the foundation in this matter is the clear position of the Government of Turkmenistan, which demonstrates the seriousness of its intentions.
“Ashgabat is demonstrating a balanced approach, carefully analyzing all nuances, conditions, and prospects to ensure that membership in the organization brings maximum benefit to the national economy. Despite the lengthy procedures, I foresee a positive outcome, and in the near future Turkmenistan will become a full member of the WTO,” the ITC expert expressed confidence.
Cooperation with the International Trade Centre and the WTO opens up significant new opportunities for Turkmenistan within the global trading system. The combination of abundant natural resources, the development of processing industries, and a willingness to comply with international quality standards creates a solid foundation for the country’s successful economic transformation, the ITC department head concluded.
