Ashgabat Marks World Health Day with a Large-Scale Sports Event

A physical culture and sports event dedicated to World Health Day was held at the capital’s Olympic Village. The initiative was organized by the State Committee of Turkmenistan for Physical Culture and Sports in cooperation with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Country Office as part of the implementation of the Joint Work Plan for 2026–2027.

The key objectives of the event were to actively engage young people in regular sports activities and strengthen the principles of a healthy lifestyle, expand girls’ participation in sports, ensure inclusive access to physical culture, and promote a culture of mutual respect and gender equality among youth.

The event was conducted in an intensive multimedia format. Activities were carried out simultaneously across four thematic venues, allowing various aspects of physical and social development to be addressed. The program included sports competitions and team games, interactive sessions on youth development issues, platforms for exchanging experience in volunteering and leadership, as well as zones for discussing the role of sports in strengthening family values.

The organization of such events highlights Turkmenistan’s commitment to international standards in the field of youth policy. The comprehensive approach to organizing the sessions made it possible not only to showcase participants’ athletic achievements but also to strengthen a platform for dialogue on equal rights and opportunities for every citizen.

This event also became another practical step in implementing the long-term cooperation strategy between Turkmenistan and UN agencies aimed at the harmonious development of the younger generation.

It should be recalled that World Health Day has been celebrated annually on April 7 since 1950—the date marking the establishment of the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1948. Today, the organization has 194 member states, including Turkmenistan.

The main idea of World Health Day is to remind people of the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle: following proper nutrition principles, avoiding harmful habits and addictions, and engaging in regular physical activity.
