A briefing was held in the capital of Turkmenistan to discuss preparations for a significant international event in the field of ecology and sustainable development – the Fourth International high-level conference within the framework of the International decade for action, «Water for sustainable development, 2018–2028».

Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Tajikistan to Turkmenistan Niyatbekzoda Vafo Alibek addressed representatives of the diplomatic corps and the media. In his speech, the head of the diplomatic mission outlined in detail the format of the upcoming forum and invited the international community to actively participate.

The conference will be held in the capital of Tajikistan from the 25th to 28th of May, 2026. The status of the event is underscored by its co-chairs, who are the Prime minister of the Republic of Tajikistan, the Deputy General-Secretary of the UN, and the Head of the UN Department of economic and social affairs.

The main mission of the Fourth Dushanbe conference is to create a global platform for activating collective efforts. Participants will focus on implementing the commitments set out in the UN Water Agenda for Action and finding innovative solutions to achieve the goals of the 2030 Agenda.

«The conference aims to share best practices and innovative solutions, strengthen partnerships between stakeholders, enhance the role of water resources in sustainable development, raise awareness, and mobilise political will to accelerate progress in achieving the water-related goals of the 2030 Agenda», − the Ambassador emphasised.

The program for the upcoming forum is structured around four key areas:

The first is to serve as a key preparatory event for the 2026 UN water Conference, which will be convened under the chairmanship of the Republic of Senegal and the United Arab Emirates;

The second is to present scalable solutions, strengthen collaboration and form partnerships to address priority water challenges and opportunities;

The third is to intensify the implementation of the water action Decade based on the four areas of work of the UN General-Secretary Action Plan for the Water action decade 2018-2028;

The fourth is the launch of an exchange of views and ideas on the final comprehensive review of the Water action decade 2018-2028 and possible paths forward, including the development of a post-2030 UN water agenda, which will take place at the UN Water conference in 2028.

The forum will be held in person, ensuring the most effective dialogue. Participation is expected from delegations of UN member states, heads of international financial institutions, representatives of the scientific community and the private sector.

The organisers place special emphasis on the principle of inclusiveness. Representatives of youth, the organisations of the women and indigenous peoples are invited to the discussion. The Ambassador also specifically noted the importance of involving experts outside the traditional water agenda.
