At the instruction of the head of state, the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs held a cycling training at the capital’s multifunctional Ashgabat Stadium on 1 June. Representatives of Guinness World Records proclaimed the event the largest cycling awareness-raising event in the world.

The number of participants of this grand cycling campaign reached 3 thousand 246 people. They practiced cycling, and then were informed on the role of this mode of transport in the current logistical environment and on traffic rules and regulations for cyclists on city streets.

The event became a vivid reflection of this well-established innovation in Turkmenistan, where a growing number of people prefer bicycles as the healthiest and most environmentally friendly mode of transport.

The rise in such tendencies in Turkmenistan attracted attention of several foreign companies working to develop cycling infrastructures in cities. Representatives of SMOOVE French company were briefed on opportunities to introduce automated bike-share systems in Ashgabat and Avaza National Tourist Zone. In their opinion, our country managed to create perfect conditions for bicycle rides, and the city’s road infrastructure is fully compatible with cycling safety standards.

The guests noted that today, under the leadership of President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, sports in Turkmenistan are reaching mass levels. Being accessible to people of all ages and beneficial for health and fitness, cycling plays a special role in the lives of Turkmen citizens.

At the 82nd meeting of the 72nd session, the UN General Assembly adopted a Resolution declaring 3 June World Bicycle Day, and this testified to the fact that the global community highly commends the proactive role of Turkmenistan in developing sports and mass sports movement, international cooperation in this sphere, and shaping the environmental culture of the society.

The Turkmen leader’s seriousness with regard to sports, primarily, as the best way to maintain people’s health, is reflected in the social policy consistently implemented by President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov so as to improve the quality of life of the people of Turkmenistan and create all conditions necessary to bring up healthy and resilient generations.
