Speaking during a meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan on June 22, Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers, Minister of Foreign Affairs R. Meredov reported on the preparations for the Summit of the Heads of the founder states of the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea, which is planned to be held in Turkmenistan.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs jointly with the other state institutions of the country developed a draft agenda for the upcoming Summit, and draft the documents to be signed on the outcomes of the Summit.

In this regard, the Turkmen leader emphasized that Turkmenistan had taken the most responsible approach towards its chairmanship in IFAS, having determined the further strengthening and expanding of the mutually agreed cooperation on improving the socio-economic and environmental situation in the Aral Sea area, the efficient use of water resources and ensuring the high level of environmental protection in the region as the main goals. Our country has considered the solution of all the tasks set in this direction in the context of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

Taking an active position on these issues, the Turkmen side put forward a number of concrete initiatives, including the development of the UN Special Program for the Aral Sea Basin and creation of a separate area of activity of the United Nations.

Instructing the relevant officials to ensure the high organizational level of the Summit, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov expressed confidence that important decisions would be taken on the outcomes of the meeting with the aim to improve the work of the Fund and enhance its positive role in the modern global processes.
