Ensuring coherent Central Asian approach towards water and energy issues was outlined as one of the important aspects of regional cooperation at Turkmen-Kyrgyz summit talks in Ashgabat.

President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov said that Turkmenistan’s position in this area has been and remains unchanged. Water and energy issues must be considered on the basis of universally recognized norms of international law, while their resolution must take place with regard for principles of mutual respect, taking into account the interests of all countries of the region. Reputable and competent international structures, primarily the UN, need to be engaged in discussion of these issues.

Resolution of water and energy issues in the region, the rational use of these vital resources on the principles of good-neighborliness and equality must become an important factor uniting the brotherly nations and countries, said the Turkmen leader.

The sides named saving the Aral Sea one of the significant issues of regional cooperation, also emphasizing its global importance. Having assumed chairmanship in the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea, Turkmenistan exercises the highest degree of responsibility in this mission.

The concept of our country’s chairmanship is aimed at resolving concrete problems of the Aral Sea, enhancing cooperation between the Aral littoral states and attracting international aid. It also includes targeted measures to reach the Sustainable Development Goals.

In this regard, we have high hopes for the Summit of the Heads of Founding Countries of the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea that will begin on 24 August in Avaza.
