Turkmen Leader Stresses Importance of Intensifying UN-IFAS Dialog

On 12 April 2018, the UN GA Resolution on Cooperation between the United Nations and the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea was prepared and unanimously adopted upon Turkmenistan’s initiative, reminded President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov speaking at the Summit of the Heads of the IFAS Founding States.

The Turkmen leader took the opportunity to thank the heads of state for supporting this document.

The resolution highlights the importance of strengthening the interaction and coordination between the UN system and the IFAS, and contains recommendations to the UN Secretary-General, specialized agencies and other organizations, programs and funds of the Community of Nations, as well as to international financial institutions to develop partnership with the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea.

It also provides for the annual provision of information by the Fund for the report of the UN Secretary-General.

The importance of this Resolution is obvious. Its main objective is to create conditions for closer cooperation between our countries and the United Nations in saving the Aral Sea, stressed the Turkmen leader.

The Summit of the Heads of the IFAS Founding States is being held at the Congress Hall of Avaza National Tourist Zone. It began with a restricted meeting and continued with an expanded session attended by members of the deleations.

The Presidents of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, the Republic of Tajikistan and the Republic of Uzbekistan have arrived in Turkmenistan for the Summit.

The meeting is taking place in the anniversary year that marks the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea. The Turkmen leader stressed in his address that the founding of the IFAS in January 1993 became a logical and timely step that reflected the understanding and determination of the countries of the region to consider the problems of the Aral Sea in the context of undertaking necessary practical actions

In the previous years, the IFAS was chaired by Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and Tajikistan. Much was done to activate the Fund’s work, and measures were taken to strengthen its partnership with international organizations.
