Meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs focuses on Turkmen leader’s initiatives

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan hosted the meeting dedicated to the implementation of the initiatives, put forward by President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov during the 73d session of the UN General Assembly.

The representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the rectors of the higher educational institutions in the country, the specialists of the embassies and international organizations, accredited in Turkmenistan, the heads of the national media as well as foreign journalists attended the meeting.

Those present got acquainted with the key areas of the versatile and ambitious work held in the framework of the constructive initiatives, put forward by the President of Turkmenistan from the rostrum of the UN General Assembly.

It was noted that the foreign policy of Turkmenistan paid priority attention to the stability and security at the regional and global level, strengthening partnership in the disarmament agenda, counter-terrorism, counternarcotics and other threats and challenges of the present. Regularly bringing up these topics for discussions at the international platforms, our country has taken specific steps in this sphere.

Among them are the provision of the comprehensive assistance and support to the social and economic revival of Afghanistan. According to President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamdov, Turkmenistan is committed to the peaceful settlement of the situation in the neighbouring friendly country, standing for the establishment of a reliable platform for the political negotiation process, and in this regard – for the further consolidation of the constructive efforts of the international community.

Those speaking during the meeting, including UN Resident Coordinator, UNDP Resident Representative in Turkmenistan E. Panova, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Central Asia, head of the UN Regional Center for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia N. German, UNICEF Representative in Turkmenistan S. Nilofer, and WHO Representative in Turkmenistan P. Karvovska among others, emphasized that addressing the UN General Assembly, the President of Turkmenistan underlined that the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals in the country had the bright social orientation. All ambitious changes taken place in Turkmenistan are closely related with them.

Those peaking emphasized that the Turkmen leader’s initiatives concerning cooperation in such strategic areas as energy and transport contributed to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. The relevant Resolutions of the UN General Assembly vividly testify to the importance and necessity of these proposals.

The meeting participants underlined that the transport and communications sector stood as one of the key segments of the world economy that play an important role in ensuring sustainable development.

Putting forward concrete initiatives on the establishment of a multimodal transit-transport and logistics infrastructure, neutral Turkmenistan that is historically located at the crossroads of the interregional routes of the Eurasian continent, in the heart of the reviving Silk Road, together with foreign partners successfully implements large projects in this field.

Along with this, our country pays great attention to ensuring the availability and rational use of water resources. Speaking consistently from these positions, Turkmenistan always declares that water and energy problems in our region should be solved based on generally accepted norms of the international law, taking into account the interests of each country and with the active participation of international organizations, primarily the UN.

The problem of saving the Aral Sea that can no longer be viewed as an internal, regional problem ranks among the priority themes of cooperation between the countries of the region and the international community. In this regard, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov appealed to the Member States of the Community of Nations to support Turkmenistan’s initiative on the development of a UN Special Programme for the Aral Sea Basin.

Summing up the discussions, the meeting participants came to the unanimous conclusion that in New York, Turkmenistan once again demonstrated its active position and far-sighted approach to the balanced solutions of the global issues the the future of humanity directly depends on.
