Regional training on countering terrorism at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan

A regional training on “Good Practices in Border Security and Management to Strengthen National and Regional Capacities in Countering Terrorism” organized by the UN Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia (UNRCCA), in cooperation with the UN Office for Countering Terrorism (UNOCT) started at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan.

The training is held in the framework of the Programme on the implementation of the constructive initiatives, put forward by President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov during the 73d session of the UN General Assembly. The Programme envisages the implementation of the Turkmen leader’s initiative on declaring the year of 2019 as the Year of Peace and Trust.

Speaking from the UN rostrum, the President of Turkmenistan emphasized that the idea supposed the development of specific measures with the aim to reduce the tension, to ensure the peaceful, political and diplomatic settlement of disputes and contradictions, to make the responsible and balanced decisions. “Securing the long-term and universal security is a key priority for the Central Asian states. Countering terrorism is an important aspect of the regional agenda”, emphasized President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, addressing the 73d session of the UN General Assembly.

The seminar is attended by Turkmenistan officials and counterterrorism practitioners from Central Asian states and Afghanistan, as well as by international experts.

“This event is a timely opportunity to join forces and enhance cross-border exchanges and harmonization of policy around border security for effective counterterrorism,” said Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Central Asia, the Head of the UN Regional Center for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia, Natalia Gherman in her remarks.

Those speaking during the meeting underlined that the neutral status and peace-making initiatives, put forward by Turkmenistan at the regional and global levels, as well as the constructive policy, pursued by the President of Turkmenistan with the aim to ensure the harmonious development and education of younger generation in the spirit of moral ideals and the principles of humanity, allowed countering extremist ideology.

In this regard, the experts noted that the authoritative core structures demonstrated keen interest in the success achieved by Turkmenistan in this sphere.

The seminar participants will also discuss the specific steps required to strengthen cooperation and will consider the various approaches of border control and policing.
