Preparatory work for the meeting of SPECA Steering Board and Economic Forum

The representatives of SPECA countries (the United Nations Special Programme for the Economies of Central Asia) held a meeting in Geneva to discuss the preparatory work for the session of SPECA Steering Board and Economic Forum to be held in Ashgabat in November, 2019 in frames of Turkmenistan’s presidency over SPECA in 2019.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, opening the meeting, UNECE Executive Secretary, Olga Algayerova spoke about the results of the visit to Turkmenistan to participate in the First Caspian Economic Forum and the initiative to establish the SPECA Fund. The UNECE Executive Secretary noted that this proposal was supported by the government of Turkmenistan.

Mr. Mario Apostolov, Regional Adviser, Trade Development and Timber Division, UNECE, briefed the meeting participants on the preparations for the SPECA Days in Ashgabat, scheduled for November.

The heads of UNECE divisions called upon SPECA countries to take an active part in projects implemented both at the regional and subregional levels in the fields of environment, transport and trade. The meeting participants underlined the importance of the initiatives put forward by the UNECE in terms of priorities for the development of the region, as well as the achievement of the SDGs.
