The State Symphony Orchestra under Rasul Klychev treated music lovers to two truly unforgettable evenings of music at the Turkmenistan Cinema and Concert Hall last weekend. Performed by the Orchestra, the soundtracks to several Hollywood hit movies coupled with the magic of cinema allowed the audience members to time travel to the past and to find themselves aboard the ‘Titanic’, to discover secrets of the Secret Agent 007, to feel deeply the horrors of World War II, to be part of ‘Star Wars’ and to visit ‘Jurassic Park’…

Each of the musical masterpieces was played against a backdrop of impressive sequences from the best Hollywood movies. Selbi Yomudova, who compered the evening, shared interesting facts with the audience explaining the history and context behind the famous works.

Rasul Klychev’s creative program with its driving energy, brilliant interpretations and a touch of classical elegance combined the dramatic narrative with beautiful harmony. A masterfully crafted soundtrack becomes an inseparable element of its movie, and they form one single, organic whole. In this regard, Nino Rota composed ideal soundtracks. This holds true for ‘The Godfather’, too. The music by Nino Rota provides an emotional environment for the crime story and personal drama unfolding in the movie.

Aybolek Mukhieva, a winner of international competitions, played a violin solo from the score for ‘Schindler’s List’, written by five-time Oscar-winner John Williams. Aybolek’s virtuoso rendition won rapturous applause from the audience and special praise from maestro Klychev.

John Williams’ music for Steven Spielberg’s another hit, the comedy-drama ‘The Terminal’, powerfully communicates the movie’s central idea: Life is waiting, but do something while waiting. Yusup Ovezov, who played a solo clarinet, expressively conveyed the emotional state, inventiveness and strong will of the main character, looking for a way out of his hopeless situation.

Turkmen jazz star Maysa Niyazova gave an emotional performance of Whitney Huston’s megahit from ‘The Bodyguard’…

Closing the concert, Rasul Klychev, who was deeply moved by prolonged rapturous applause from the listeners, said: “Dear Friends! After our performance, you may feel like re-watching some of the movies we reminded you of through the music featured in them. And this will mean that our aim has been achieved.”

Brief interviews with the audience members only proved that the evening of music had totally lived up to maestro Klychev’s expectations. I would like to quote one of the Symphony Orchestra’s fans, Tatiana Golshtein, to epitomize enthusiastic reviews from the concert-goers: “Rasul Klychev’s concert programs are a true source of inspiration. They make our life brighter, more colorful and poetic, helping us to explore new aesthetic dimensions and to see the extraordinary in the ordinary”.
