Further development of national laws regulating mass media activities in Turkmenistan in the age of advanced communications and information technologies was the focus of the roundtable, which was held in the conference hall of the Ak Altyn Hotel in Ashgabat. The two-day forum was organized by the Government of Turkmenistan and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) under the project aimed at promoting the process of media law reforms.
The roundtable brought together the members of the delegation led by Dunja Mijatovic, OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media, who were on a visit to the Turkmen capital, deputies of the Mejlis, representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Culture, the Turkmen National Institute for Democracy and Human Rights under the President of Turkmenistan, the Institute of State and Law under the President of Turkmenistan, the State Committee for Television, radio and Cinematography, the Institute of International relations of the MFA of Turkmenistan and Turkmen newspapers
The reports on the basic international standards, norms and practices of other countries in the mass media sector were presented to roundtable participants, and the OSCE experts presented the comments and recommendations on the improvement on current laws regulating mass media activities. According to experts of this authoritative international organisation the study of best international practice in this sector was critical for the success of mass media activities and modernization of media law.
Turkmen specialists made the presentations on critical aspects of the programmes of information policy reforms, further development of Turkmen mass media and modernization of the national laws regulating mass media activities. It was noted that these issues were key priorities of the national development strategy implemented under the leadership of President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov in Turkmenistan nowadays. The study and introduction of best international practices, adoption of advanced computer and information technologies in all spheres are significant components of the ongoing progressive reforms. In this context it was emphasized that the Turkmen state took substantial steps towards active partnerships with the leading international organisations, including with the OSCE.
During the discussion roundtable participants underlined the role of the ongoing project aimed at promoting the process of media law reforms in Turkmenistan implemented in collaboration with the OSCE Centre in Ashgabat and called for intensification of fruitful partnerships and discussed the options for collaboration.
