In the coming years, the area of greenhouses in Turkmenistan will significantly expands. According to the Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs, more than 150 greenhouses with a total area of 1,375 hectares are under construction in agricultural areas. Some of the private sector farms have already started growing fruits, vegetables and berry crops. At present, there are more than 100 operating greenhouses with the total area of more than 350 hectares. Many farms started growing tomatoes all year round in greenhouses, using modern high-tech equipment and innovative methods of plant care.

Greenhouses play an important role in maintaining food security. They provide the population with fresh vegetables all year round and create permanent jobs. Private agricultural producers of Turkmenistan provide the domestic and foreign markets with varieties of tomatoes, cucumbers, bell peppers, strawberries and some other food products. In particular, in 2020 it was harvested more than 33,000 tons of tomatoes that is several times more as compare to 2019. Tomatoes, grown in Turkmenistan, have become one of the key export products of the country, gaining great popularity in the CIS market. In 2020, about 17,000 tons of tomatoes have been exported to foreign markets.

Widening the range of greenhouse fruits and vegetables will help to increase the export potential and the overall development of agriculture. Some private farms are planning to grow bananas and citrus fruits.
