Lebap province: the time of reforms

Opening in Lebap province of new cement works in Garlyk settlement and highway bridge Atamyrat-Kerkichi over Amyderya, laying of the foundation stone of two new bridges and new airport became significant events in the economic life of the region.

Lebap province situated in the eastern part of Turkmenistan occupies over 19% of total area of the country (93.7 thousand km2). Over 21% of Turkmenistan’s population resides on its territory. Today, it is the large industrial region of the country with huge industrial potential. Having advantageous geographical position, it performs the function of the traffic centre, linking Turkmenistan with other countries of the Central Asia, having the both railway and multibranch network of motor roads.

Within the last years, several giant new buildings were constructed on the territory of the province. They provide powerful impulse to the development of economy of the province and country. These are the construction of Atamyrat-Kerkichi Railway Bridge, Turkmenistan-Uzbekistan-Kazakhstan-China gas pipeline, cotton-spinning factory in Turkmenabat. Besides, it was constructed tens of social facilities such as Rukhiyet Palace, stadium for 10 thousand seats with sport complex and hotel, Drama Theatre, sport schools and structures, hospitals, medical centers, children’s preschool institutions, comprehensive schools and others. It was erected the complex of administrative-economic and socio-cultural buildings in the etrap center Dovletli.

Specific weight of fuel industry in the region comes to 60.6%, including gas – 47.3%, oil-refining – 12.8%. Chemical and construction industries also keep development paces. Grain and cotton are major crops in agriculture. The province generates electric power and produces liquefied gas, cotton fabrics, knitted wear, whole-milk products, flour, bakery and confectionery products.

Huge reserves of minerals, including limestone, clay, silica sand, gypsum and etc., are the base of development of industrial potential of the region. These are essential raw material in production of cement. The opening of new cement plant will provide the country with high-quality national building materials. Today, this sector in Turkmenistan is growing. In future, the growth paces of construction volumes will be high.
