Campaign for the presidential nomination started in Turkmenistan

The Central Commission for Elections and Referenda of Turkmenistan held a regular meeting in the framework of the preparations for the presidential elections scheduled for February 12, 2012.

As is known, the presidential election campaign will be launched in Turkmenistan in accordance with the Resolution of the Mejlis of Turkmenistan. The Central Commission for Elections and Referenda announced during the meeting that the campaign for the presidential nomination would start on December 14, 2011 according to the national law.

The heads of election commissions from the regions of the country and Ashgabat reported on the readiness to hold this important political action. It was particularly noted that the requirements of the action plan endorsed by the Central Commission to provide organizational support to the presidential election campaign had been fulfilled.

They reported particularly that the significant work involving public organisations and governmental institutions at all levels had been done, 2,307 polling stations had been opened that is much more than ever, of them 29 in foreign countries. Polling stations are supplied with communications and office equipment, including transparent ballot boxes, reference and methodological materials, including booklets, brochures with the texts of statutory and legal acts, leaflets and other devices. The membership of divisional election committees had been approved, and the electoral registers had been completed. Specific issues related to the important stage of the presidential election campaign – the nomination of presidential candidates had been discussed during the seminars and meetings involving the members of election commissions held throughout the country.

The activists of public organisations carry out the canvassing campaign. They conduct regular meetings with local citizens to elucidate the basic provisions of the Law of Turkmenistan “On the Presidential Election in Turkmenistan”, the rights and obligations of the voters and the voting procedures.

It was noted that the critical role in the forthcoming election was assigned to national observers. National observers representing the Democratic Party and other public organisations are to make the election process transparent and open that will contribute to increasing the level of confidence of campaign participants in the voting and election results. In this context the members of the working group reported on the work done in collaboration with national observers.

The information on the work done at local level is delivered each day to the Central Commission. This work is carried on and will reach a high on February 12, 2012 when the election which is to demonstrate the dynamics and scope of the ongoing democratic reforms in Turkmenistan and the determination of the Turkmen people to move forward with confidence along the path of progress and constructive endeavours will be held.

The Commission members paid particular attention to the role of extensive media coverage during the election campaign. They also discussed a number of other issues related to the organization and holding of the presidential election and adopted the decisions.
