The roundtable on the national priorities for greenhouse gas emissions reduction organized by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Turkmenistan with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan was conducted in the conference hall of the President Hotel.
The forum brought together participants representing the Mejlis, Turkmen ministries and departments, the Institute of Strategic Planning and Economic Development and news agencies. An expert from Bulgaria Christo Christov participated in the roundtable as international consultant.
As is known, Turkmenistan fulfills its international climate change commitments by taking specific steps to mitigate them. Last week our country took an active part in the United Nations Climate Change Conference which took place in Durban (South Africa). The main outcome of the climate change forum was the adoption of the decision to develop a new international agreement urging all countries to meet emission reduction commitments which should enter into force no later than 2020.
The aim of the roundtable was to present and discuss the recommendations prepared by UNDP for the elaboration of the low emission development strategies and nationally appropriate mitigation actions and the development of the action plans.
The reports presented at the forum focused on the steps taken in our country to promote the policy of large-scale reforms initiated by President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov to modernize enterprises of the fuel and energy, motor transport, construction and communal sectors and the chemical industry, apply advanced environmentally friendly technologies in all sectors of the national economy and the measures taken to enhance the effectiveness of air pollution control activities, improve environmental standards and requirements for industrial facilities under construction. Particular attention was paid to clean development mechanism projects, i.e. the elaboration of innovative technologies, including renewable energy use.
Roundtable participants underscored the fruitfulness of an exchange of views and expressed an interest in building up international cooperation in this important field.
