Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov was born in Babarap settlement in Geoktepe Rayon, Ashgabat Oblast, Turkmenistan on June 29, 1957.
In 1979, he graduated from the Turkmen State Medical Institute in Ashgabat.
In 1979-1997, he held the appointments in the Ministry of Health and Medical Industry of Turkmenistan. He worked as a lecturer, Assistant Professor of the Department of Preventive Dentistry, the Dean of the Department of Stomatology of the Turkmen State Medical Institute, Director of the Stomatology Centre of the Ministry of Health and Medical Industry of Turkmenistan. He defended a PhD thesis. He is Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Economics, Professor and Academician of the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan.
In December 1997, he held an appointment as Minister of Health and Medical Industry of Turkmenistan. He was additionally appointed as Executive Director of the Healthcare Development Fund of Turkmenistan and Acting Rector of the Turkmen State Medical Institute.
In April 2011, he was appointed Vice Premier of the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan.
Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov has served as Acting President of Turkmenistan and Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Turkmenistan since December 21, 2006.
During the February 11, 2007 elections Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov was chosen from among the six candidates as the President of Turkmenistan.
The inauguration of Gurbanguly Malikgulyyevich Berdimuhamedov as the President of Turkmenistan took place during the XIX Halk Maslakhaty (People’s Council) meeting on February 14, 2007.
The title of Hero of Turkmenistan was conferred to President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov on October 25, 2011.
